The District Council of Yorke Peninsula was a local government area on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia from 1888 to 1969. History The District Council of Yorke Peninsula was officially proclaimed on 5 January 1888 by the ''District Councils Act 1887'' as constituting the Hundreds of Cunningham, Kilkerran, Wauraltee and Muloowurtie, and the unincorporated portion of the Hundred of Maitland. "DISTRICT OF YORKE PENINSULA.-Comprising the Hundreds of Cunningham, Kilkerran, Wauraltee, and Muloowurtie, together with that portion of the Hundred of Maitland not included in the Corporate Town of Maitland." This cluster of adjacent hundreds spanned the entire width of the peninsula south of Port Wakefield for about north to south. Port Wakefield, South Australia
Port Wakefield (formerly Port Henry) is a town at the mouth of the River Wakefield, at the head of the Gulf St Vincent in South Australia. It was the first government town to be established north of the state capital, Adelaide. Port Wakefield is situated from the Adelaide city centre on the Port Wakefield Highway section of the A1 National Highway. Port Wakefield is a major stop on the Adelaide – Yorke Peninsula and Adelaide – Port Augusta road routes. The District Council of Central Yorke Peninsula was a local government area in South Australia from 1969 to 1997. The council seat was at Maitland. History The District Council of Central Yorke Peninsula was formed on 1 April 1969 with the amalgamation of the Corporate Town of Maitland and the original District Council of Yorke Peninsula at the request of the two councils. It had seven wards at its inception: Kilkerran, Maitland Township, Maitland District, Ardrossan Township, Cunningham, Wauraltee and Muloowurtie, each electing two councillors. It initially operated out of the Maitland and District Hall, which was refurbished for this purpose, but in 1983 moved into an office block in Elizabeth Street, Maitland. Yorke Peninsula
The Yorke Peninsula is a peninsula located northwest and west of Adelaide in South Australia, between Spencer Gulf on the west and Gulf St Vincent on the east. The peninsula is separated from Kangaroo Island to the south by Investigator Strait. The most populous town in the region is Kadina.
