District 6 (Texas House Of Representatives)
District 6 is a district in the Texas House of Representatives. It was created in the 3rd legislature (1849–1851). The district has been represented by Republican Matt Schaefer since January 8, 2013, upon his initial election to the Texas House. As a result of redistricting after the 2020 Federal census, from the 2022 elections the district encompasses the southern half of Smith County. Tyler is the most populous city in the district. Matt Schaefer
Matthew R. Schaefer (born February 11, 1976) is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Texas House of Representatives for the 6th district. A Republican Party (United States), Republican, Schaefer is assigned to the Defense & Veterans' Affairs and Urban Affairs committees. He ran without Democratic Party (United States), Democratic opposition in his successful bid for a fourth legislative term in the general election held on November 6, 2018. Upshur County, Texas
Upshur County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,892. The county seat is Gilmer. The county is named for Abel P. Upshur, who was U.S. Secretary of State during President John Tyler's administration. Upshur County is part of the Longview, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the Longview–Marshall, TX Combined Statistical Area. History Humans have inhabited what is now Upshur County since at least 10,000 years ago. The Caddoan people lived in this area, but were driven out about 1750, probably due to losses from new infectious diseases carried chronically by Europeans. Twelfth Texas Legislature
The Twelfth Texas Legislature met from February 8, 1870 to December 2, 1871 in four sessions — provisional, called, regular, and adjourned. Senate There were incidents with Indian marauders and cattle thieves in Texas and on May 6, 1870, Senator Theodor Rudolph Hertzberg introduced a bill to reorganize the state militia. The bill included provisions for a unique "state guard" and for martial law. David Webster Flanagan who had for years been a staunch Radical Republican opposed the bill because of its clauses allowing Governor Edmund J. Davis to impose martial law. The cost was also the reason why some Republicans opposed the bill, but Senator Matthew Gaines, an African American, believed that racism was the reason for opposition, since many of the "state guard" would be black.
