Discovery Ensemble
Discovery Ensemble was a Boston-based chamber orchestra founded by Music Director Courtney Lewis and Artistic Director David St. George. The orchestra, made up of young professionals from the Boston area, gave its inaugural concert in October 2008. It disappeared from the Boston music scene after an announcement cancelling the already advertised 2014 season. Discovery Ensemble had two missions. It was a chamber orchestra that performed to local acclaim in the Boston Globe and the Boston Phoenix. Concerts took place at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Discovery Ensemble's second mission was education. The orchestra presented four Discovery Programs per year, each consisting of two in-school workshops and a matinee concert for children from local schools. Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends". For more than 100 years, chamber music was played primarily by amateur musicians in their homes, and even today, when chamber music performance has migrated from the home to the concert hall, many musicians, amateur and professional, still play chamber music for their own pleasure. Cambridge ( ) is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Courtney Lewis (conductor)
Courtney Lewis (born 29 May 1984, Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a British conductor. Biography Lewis was a pupil at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He attended the University of Cambridge, during which time he studied composition with Robin Holloway and clarinet with Dame Thea King. He graduated from Cambridge with starred first class honours. After completing a master's degree with a focus on the music of György Ligeti, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music, where his teachers included Sir Mark Elder and Clark Rundell. Lewis was the co-founder and music director of Boston's Discovery Ensemble from 2008 until 2014, when the ensemble ended operations after its board declared a fundraising impasse. Lewis made his major American orchestral debut in November 2008 with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Lewis served as associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra from 2009 to 2014. Lloyd Schwartz (born November 29, 1941) is an American poet, and the Frederick S. Troy Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He was the classical music editor of ''The Boston Phoenix'', a publication that is now defunct.
