South Africans with disabilities constitute a sizeable proportion of the population, and their status in society is extremely varied in a developing nation with socio-economic inequality and a history of apartheid. Wealthy city dwellers have access to a wide range of assistance, whereas the poor struggle for even the basic necessities of life. Optional Protocol To The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities
The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is a side-agreement to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It was adopted on 13 December 2006, and entered into force at the same time as its parent Convention on 3 May 2008. As of December 2022, it has 94 signatories and 102 state parties. The Optional Protocol establishes an individual complaints mechanism for the Convention similar to those of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. National Assembly Of South Africa
The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa, located in Cape Town, Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality. The National Assembly is presided over by a Speaker, assisted by a Deputy Speaker. Maria Rantho
Maria Rantho (1953 – July 12, 2002) was a South African disability rights activist and politician. She was the first wheelchair user elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. Career Rantho was working as a nurse when she survived a spinal injury in an automobile accident; she used a wheelchair afterwards. She co-founded and became chair of Disabled People South Africa, worked for the formation of the Disabled Women's Development Programme, and was a member of the African National Congress Women's League. In the restructuring of South Africa after apartheid, she was responsible for the disability desk in the Deputy President's office; her projects were later formalized as the Office on the Status of Disabled Persons. In 1994, Rantho was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa, the first disabled member of that body. Union Buildings
The Union Buildings ( af, Uniegebou) form the official seat of the South African Government and also house the offices of the President of South Africa. The imposing buildings are located in Pretoria, atop Meintjieskop at the northern end of Arcadia, close to historic Church Square and the Voortrekker Monument.
