Dirty Tricks (British Airways Scandal)
"Dirty Tricks" was the name of a business scandal targeted against Virgin Atlantic in the 1990s. It was run by the rival airline British Airways (BA), whereby BA representatives would call up Virgin customers pretending to be from Virgin and try to get them to switch their flights to BA as well as hacking computers to gain access to insider information on Virgin's flights. The Virgin Group chairman, Richard Branson sued BA over it and was paid a total of £3.51 million in compensation. Another Virgin Group company was subject to predatory behaviour, when the Coca-Cola Company reacted negatively to the success of Virgin Cola. History British Airways had traditionally been the flag carrier airline for the United Kingdom. Richard Branson started up Virgin Atlantic after being bumped from an American Airlines flight. ''Dirty Tricks'' is a 1981 American comedy film directed by Alvin Rakoff and written by William W. Norton, Eleanor E. Norton, Thomas Gifford and Camille Gifford. The film stars Elliott Gould, Kate Jackson, Rich Little, Arthur Hill, John Juliani and Alberta Watson. Plot A Harvard University student, (Nicholas Campbell) attempts to contact Prof. Chandler, (Elliott Gould) to authenticate a mysterious letter supposedly signed by George Washington. The student is murdered and the letter vanishes. Professor Chandler finds himself being hunted by a mafia killer and intrepid TV reporter Karen Polly Bishop (Kate Jackson). Ratfucking
Ratfucking is an American slang term for political sabotage or dirty tricks, particularly pertaining to elections. It was brought to public attention by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein in the book which chronicled their investigative reporting of the Watergate affair, ''All the President's Men'' (1974). Origins Woodward and Bernstein's account in ''All the President's Men'' reports that many Republican staffers (H. R. Haldeman (pre-1948), Donald Segretti (early 1960s), White House aide Tim Elbourne, Ronald Louis Ziegler, and Dwight Chapin) had attended the University of Southern California and participated in the highly competitive student elections there. At USC, future Watergate scandal participants Dwight L. Chapin, Tim Elbourne, Donald Segretti, Gordon C. Strachan, Herbert Porter, and Ron Ziegler were members of Trojans for Representative Government.
