Dirofilaria Fausti
''Dirofilaria'' is a filarial (arthropod-borne) nematode (roundworm), in the family Onchocercidae. Some species cause dirofilariasis, a state of parasitic infection, in humans and other animals. There are about 27 species in the genus.Michalski, M. L., et al. (2010). dentification and phylogenetic analysis of ''Dirofilaria ursi'' (Nematoda: Filarioidea) from Wisconsin black bears (''Ursus americanus'') and its ''Wolbachia'' endosymbiont.''Journal of Parasitology'', 96(2), 412-419. These are generally divided into two subgenera, ''Dirofilaria'' and '' Nochtiella''. Some species are well-known parasites, including ''Dirofilaria immitis'', the dog heartworm, ''Dirofilaria repens'', which affects many types of nonhuman mammals, and ''Dirofilaria tenuis'', which usually parasitizes raccoons, but can infect humans, as well. Human dirofilariasis is generally caused by ''D. immitis'' and ''D. repens''. The former can cause pulmonary dirofilariasis, which may have no symptoms. Another ...

Dirofilaria Immitis
''Dirofilaria immitis'', also known as heartworm or dog heartworm, is a parasitic roundworm that is a type of filarial worm, a small thread-like worm, that causes dirofilariasis. It is spread from host to host through the bites of mosquitoes. There are four genera of mosquitoes that transmit dirofilariasis, ''Aedes'', ''Culex'', ''Anopheles'', and '' Mansonia''. The definitive host is the dog, but it can also infect cats, wolves, coyotes, jackals, foxes, ferrets, bears, seals, sea lions and, under rare circumstances, humans. Adult heartworms often reside in the pulmonary arterial system (lung arteries) as well as the heart, and a major health effect in the infected animal host is a manifestation of damage to its lung vessels and tissues. In cases involving advanced worm infestation, adult heartworms may migrate to the right heart and the pulmonary artery. Heartworm infection may result in serious complications for the infected host if left untreated, eventually leading to dea ...

Dioctophyme Renale
''Dioctophyme renale'', commonly referred to as the giant kidney worm, is a parasitic nematode (roundworm) whose mature form is found in the kidneys of mammals. ''D. renale'' is distributed worldwide, but is less common in Africa and Oceania. It affects fish eating mammals, particularly mink and dogs. Human infestation is rare, but results in kidney destruction, usually of one kidney and hence not fatal. A 2019 review listed a total of 37 known human cases of dioctophymiasis in 10 countries with the highest number (22) in China. Upon diagnosis through tissue sampling, the only treatment is surgical excision. Synonyms Dioctophymosis, dioctophymiasis, giant kidney worm, kidney worm infection, ''Dioctophyme renale'' infection History of discovery ''Dioctophyme renale'' was discovered in 1583. Almost two centuries later, in 1782, Johann Goeze first described ''D. renale'' upon discovering the worms in a dog kidney. The family Dioctophymidae has only one genus (''Dioctophyme' ...
