Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Spaarnwoude
Spaarnwoude is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and lies about northeast of Haarlem. Overview The village was first mentioned in the first half of the 11th century as Spirnerewalt, and means "forest along the Spaarne river". The former Dutch Reformed church dates from 1764, but has a tower from the 13th century. It was decommissioned in 1880, but is still used for cultural activities. North of Spaarnwoude lies the Spaarnwoude recreation area, which is located in the municipalities of Velsen and Haarlemmermeer. There is a railway station, Haarlem Spaarnwoude, which lies southwest of the village. An IKEA shop is nearby, on the north side. To the east of IKEA is the Veerplas. Spaarnwoude was home to 443 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1857, when it merged with Haarlemmerliede. Jan De Visscher
Jan de Visscher (ca.1636, Haarlem – 1692-1712, Amsterdam), was a Dutch Golden Age engraver who became a painter in later life. Biography According to Houbraken he was an able etcher who made famous prints (in his lifetime) after the works of Philips Wouwerman and Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, and who became an able pupil of the landscape painter Michiel Carrée at the ripe age of 56. Houbraken spoke to Michiel Carrée personally about his art, who claimed that Visscher became as good as he was at Italianate landscapes. No paintings by Visscher's hand are known today, but he made many prints after various famous painters from Haarlem such as Berchem, Adriaen van Ostade, Jan van Goyen, and his brother Cornelis. Houbraken mentioned Jan Visser from Haarlem with the nickname ''Slempop'' at another point in his book, in his biographical sketch of "P. Molyn", son of Pieter de Molijn. Jacob Westerbaen
Ridder Jacob Westerbaen (7 September 1599 – 31 March 1670), ''heer'' (squire) of Brantwyck-en-Ghybelant, was a Dutch poet. Life Westerbaen was born in The Hague, the son of a rope maker, and was initially schooled in the Staten-College, then as secretary and preacher of the Remonstrants of the Synod of Dort. There, he studied medicine, after which he established himself in 1623 as a physician in the Hague. Two years later, he married Anna Weytsen, the widow of Reinier van Groenevelt, despite opposition from her noble family. He was a good friend of Constantijn Huygens. Later, he came into contact with Jacob Cats, Blasius (1639—1672) and Jan Vos (ca. 1610—1667), becoming good friends with all three.
