This is a list of diplomatic missions of Nauru, not including its honorary consulates in Agana, Auckland, London, Honolulu, Pago Pago and New Delhi. Nauru is the smallest republic in the world. It was previously quite wealthy, thanks to royalties collected from phosphate mining. This allowed the country of 12,000 to expand its public service workforce to 1,600. Economic mismanagement has forced the Nauruan government to cut back on its overseas presence. With mounting debts it was forced to relinquish Nauru House in Melbourne, a 52-story building owned by the Nauru government which housed its consulate-general. In a bid to stay solvent a covertly funded Nauran embassy was planned to be opened in Beijing as a transit point for defecting North Korean scientists (Operation Weasel). Foreign Relations Of Nauru
Nauru, following independence from the United Kingdom, became a sovereign, independent republic on 31 January 1968. Nauru has established diplomatic relations with a number of nations, including most of its Pacific neighbors with which it maintains economic, cultural and administrative ties. Membership in international organizations Nauru was admitted to the United Nations on 14 September 1999. Nauru's application to the United Nations was questioned by the People's Republic of China due to Nauru's close diplomatic and trade links to Taiwan. Operation Weasel
Operation Weasel is the name given to an alleged secret operation involving the governments of Nauru, New Zealand and the United States. The exact nature of the operation, if it did indeed exist, is subject to disagreement — most accounts link it to investigations into the sale of Nauruan passports, the defection of North Korean scientists to the West, or both. This was a classic example of what is known as a canary trap - a spy tactic of feeding sufficiently important intelligence (traceable but false) to suspects to find leaks. The first public mentions of Operation Weasel were made in March 2003, when ''The Australian'' printed a story claiming that the Nauruan embassy in Beijing was a front by which North Korean defectors could be assisted in escaping to the West. Consulate-general
