Diphoterine Emergency Kit
Diphoterine® is a decontamination solution used in first aid for the emergency treatment of chemical spills to the eyes and body. Mechanism of action Diphoterine® solution contains an amphoteric, chelating molecule: a substance which is capable of reacting with both acids and alkalis when applied to either type of chemical spill, stopping the aggressive action of a corrosive or irritant chemical, halting the reaction with the body. However, it is not fully effective at halting the body's reaction with hydrofluoric acid. This is because hydrofluoric acid is poisonous as well as corrosive. Treatment with either Hexafluorine or calcium gluconate is required to deal with hydrofluoric acid contamination. Human decontamination is the process of removing hazardous materials from the human body, including chemicals, radioactive substances, and infectious material. General principle People suspected of being contaminated are usually separated by sex, and led into a decontamination tent, trailer, or pod, where they shed their potentially contaminated clothes in a strip-down room. A hydrofluoric acid burn is a chemical burn from hydrofluoric acid. Where it contacts the skin it results in significant pain, swelling, redness, and skin breakdown. If the fumes are breathed in swelling of the upper airway and bleeding may occur. Complications can include electrolyte, heart, lung, kidney, and neurological problems. Most exposures occur at work. With concentrations less than 7%, onset of symptoms may not occur for hours while with concentrations greater than 15% onset of symptoms is nearly immediate. Diagnosis should include blood tests for calcium, potassium, and magnesium along with an electrocardiogram. Initial treatment of exposure involves removing contaminated clothing and washing with large amounts of water over at least 30 minutes. Other measures include applying calcium gluconate cream.
