In ancient Greek religion and myth, Dionysus (; grc, Διόνυσος ) is the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity, and theatre. The Romans called him Bacchus ( or ; grc, Βάκχος ) for a frenzy he is said to induce called ''bakkheia''. As Dionysus Eleutherios ("the liberator"), his wine, music, and ecstatic dance free his followers from self-conscious fear and care, and subvert the oppressive restraints of the powerful. His ''thyrsus'', a fennel-stem sceptre, sometimes wound with ivy and dripping with honey, is both a beneficent wand and a weapon used to destroy those who oppose his cult and the freedoms he represents. ''Dionysos'' is a 1984 French comedy film directed by Jean Rouch, starring Jean Monod and Hélène Puiseux. It tells the story of an American drama teacher who after writing a thesis on Dionysus tries to combine Dionysian rites with the work at a car factory, in an attempt to create the world's first car built in joyous frenzy. The film competed at the 41st Venice International Film Festival. It was released in France on 3 December 1986. Dionysos, commonly pronounced , was established in Southern California, United States around the beginning of 2002. They are a professional three-piece band, who toured and traveled constantly in support of their music and message. The band's name comes from ancient Greek mythology. Dionysos was the god of wine, theater, agriculture, madness, and ecstasy. The band came up with the name after researching the works of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Dionysos is a French Rock music, rock band formed in 1993 in Valence, Drôme, Valence, Drôme; they formed at their lycée. They perform songs in both French and English, and have released six studio albums. They are well known in France for their surrealism and eccentricity. Their first album, ''Happening Songs'', was self-produced and with entirely English lyrics. With their second album ''The sun is blue like eggs in Winter'' (also self-produced) Babet became a member. In 1999, they signed to a major label (the now defunct Trema (music), Trema) and released ''Haïku'' which brought the band in to the public eye, mainly thanks to the success of the single "Coccinelle". Dionysus was a Sweden, Swedish/Germany, German power metal band formed in 1999 by Sinergy drummer Ronny Milianowicz and disbanded in 2008. Biography Dionysus debut album ''Sign of Truth'' was recorded at the Rhön Studio in Fulda, Germany in 2002, which is best known for its productions with Edguy and Avantasia. ''Dionysos'' is an opera by Wolfgang Rihm based on Friedrich Nietzsche's '' Dionysian Dithyrambs''. The composer wrote the libretto and subtitled his work: "Opernphantasie nach Texten von Friedrich Nietzsche / Szenen und Dithyramben" ("Operatic fantasy after texts by Friedrich Nietzsche / Scenes and dithyrambs"). It premiered at the Salzburg Festival on 27 July 2010. History ''Dionysos'' is Rihm's eleventh work for the stage. He considered an opera around Dionysos for 15 years and realized it when he received a commission from the Salzburg Festival, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin and De Nederlandse Opera.
