Diogo Carreira
Diogo Carreira (born December 2, 1978) is a retired Portuguese basketball player. A point guard, Carreira spent his entire career in his home-country, being mostly associated with Seixal, Belenenses and Benfica, winning several honours with the latter. Career Born in Barreiro, Carreira interested in basketball was sparked by a cousin, who took him to Barreirense, where he started competing at age 9. In 1997, he started his professional career in the basketball section of telecommunications company, Portugal Telecom, staying for one season, before moving to Seixal. After two seasons with the Seixal team, he returned to Portugal Telecom, where he won his first league title, and made his first cap for the national team. In 2002, the 23-year-old had his first spell at his hometown club, Barreirense, representing them for one year, before returning to Seixal for a second stint, in the season immediately after. The point guard (PG), also called the one or the point, is one of the five Basketball positions, positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position. Point guards are expected to run the team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time. Above all, the point guard must understand and accept their coach's game plan; in this way, the position can be compared to a quarterback in American football. 2009 Flu Pandemic In Portugal
The 2009 flu pandemic, an influenza outbreak commonly known as "swine flu", affected Portugal from May 2009 to early 2010. The outbreak caused 122 deaths in the country. __TOC__ Course of the outbreak On 4 May, there was one confirmed case in Lisbon, Portugal, but it did not represent any concern, because the risk of transmission was no longer present at that time. On 1 June, Ana Jorge, the Portuguese Health Minister, confirmed the second case in Portugal, a 33-year-old man who travelled from the United States, first landing in Frankfurt, Germany. The case was reported at São João Hospital, Oporto. On 30 June, five new cases were announced in Portugal elevating the total number of cases to 18. EuroBasket, also commonly referred to as the European Basketball Championship, is the main international basketball competition that is contested quadrennially, by the senior men's national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe, which is the European zone within the International Basketball Federation. The Troféu António Pratas (English: ''António Pratas Trophy'') is an annual cup competition for Portuguese basketball teams organized by the Portuguese Basketball Federation. Created in 2007 to honour António Pratas, its first edition was only open to Proliga clubs. A year later, it expanded to include teams from the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol and has since established itself as a "curtain-raiser" for the season. Played in early October in two different levels, Proliga and LPB, each winner receives a trophy for their respective competition. After the inaugural season won by Benfica, its second had six winners in the three different regions. Its third year was a one-off edition were both leagues played together.
