The Battle of Troina was an important battle that took place between 31 July and 6 August 1943, as part of the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War II. Forces of the U.S. II Corps, part of the U.S. Seventh Army, under George S. Patton, engaged in fierce fighting around the town of Troina in the central portion of Sicily along the Caronie Mountains. The battle focused around the numerous hills and mountains surrounding Troina which the Germans had heavily fortified and used as bases for direct and indirect fire. San Silvestro is a Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Sccaone, along SS120, in the town of Troina, in the province of Enna, region of Sicily, Italy. History and Description A small church at this site, dedicated to St Bartholemew was present by the 13th-century; in this century, the tomb and body of St Silvester of Troina, a basilian monk and patron of the town, were putatively discovered. The church was granted to the Confraternity of San Silvestro in 1436. A new church was erected and the saint is now buried in the chapel crypt. The present church is the result of refurbishment in the 19th century. A central nave is separated from the aisles by solid stone columns with Corinthian capitals. Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary the Greater) is the Roman Catholic church located on Largo Santa Maria Maggiore in the town of Nicosia, in the province of Enna, region of Sicily, Italy. History and Description A church at this site was erected in the 12th century, replacing a pre-existing mosque, by the Norman conqueror, Conte Ruggero. The church was initially called ''Santa Maria la Scala'', presumably because of its elevation atop a hill relative to the town. Immigration to Troini led to the expansion of the church, and its rededication in 1207 as Santa Maria Maggiore. This church was destroyed in 1757 by landslides. Reconstruction of the basilica began in 1767 under the architect Serafino da Catania, but only by 1800 were all three naves completed.
