Underworld (band)
Underworld are a British electronic music group formed in 1987 in Cardiff, Wales and the principal collaborative project of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. Prominent former members include Darren Emerson, from 1991 to 2001, and Darren Price, as part of the live band from 2005 to 2016. Junior Boy's Own is an English record label specialising in electronic dance music. Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and X-Press 2 are its most successful artists. History The origins of the label go back to 1987, when a group of young clubbers started a fanzine named ''Boys Own'', inspired by a similar fanzine for Liverpool football fans called ''The End'', edited by future singer of The Farm, Peter Hooton. The Boys Own crew, consisting of Terry Farley, Andrew Weatherall, Cymon Eckel and Steven Hall, knew fellow Chelsea fan Paul Oakenfold and through their connections with him they were invited to the early acid house club nights that Oakenfold was holding in London. As the crew began to become more involved in clubbing, the fanzine began to cover the nascent scene, becoming its key chronicler and influencing a wave of similar fanzines across the country. Rick Smith (Underworld)
Richard Smith (born 25 May 1959) is a Welsh musician and composer. He is a founding member of British electronic music group Underworld and an acclaimed composer, having collaborated extensively with director Danny Boyle, most notably as the musical director for the London 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony, alongside Underworld's Karl Hyde. He is also a founding member of the multi-discipline design and film collective Tomato. Career Smith left a bank clerk job in Llanelli to do an electronic and electrical engineering degree; however, he dropped out during his finals after being asked to join Hyde’s band The Screen Gemz. In 1983 they formed Freur and recorded two albums for CBS Records International. The group disbanded in 1986. In 1987 Smith and Hyde formed Underworld, and the pair are the longest and only original serving members of the musical project, still performing together today. Karl Hyde
Karl Hyde (born 10 May 1957) is an English musician and artist. He is a founding member of British electronic group Underworld. Hyde has also released a solo album, made albums with Brian Eno and Matthew Herbert, and contributed towards the score for the London 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony alongside Rick Smith. He is a founding member of the multi-discipline design and film collective Tomato and has published several books. Career Hyde moved to Cardiff in the late 1970s to study at Cardiff College of Art. There he formed the new wave-synthpop band Freur in 1982 with Rick Smith and Alfie Thomas. "Two Months Off" is the first single by Underworld (band), Underworld from the album ''A Hundred Days Off'', originally released in 2002. This track was one of the first songs that they released as a duo. The single peaked on the UK Singles Chart at number 12 as well as number two for three weeks on the US dance chart. A short spoken word vocal section can be heard above the track lead-in. The contributing artist for these vocals is Juanita Boxill, whose voice also features in "Little Speaker", track 5 of ''A Hundred Days Off''. "Born Slippy .NUXX" is a song by British electronic music group Underworld. It was first released as the B-side to "Born Slippy", in May 1995. The fragmented lyrics, by vocalist Karl Hyde, describe the perspective of an alcoholic. After it was used in the 1996 film ''Trainspotting'', "Born Slippy .NUXX" was issued as a single on 1 July 1996 and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. It has been named one of the best tracks of the 1990s by numerous publications. Writing Vocalist Karl Hyde wrote the lyrics for "Born Slippy .NUXX" after a night drinking in Soho, London, hoping to capture the way a drunk "sees the world in fragments". ''A Hundred Days Off'' is the sixth album by Underworld. The album produced two UK Singles Chart entries: "Two Months Off", which reached no. 12 and "Dinosaur Adventure 3D", which reached no. 34. Although this was the first album since Darren Emerson's departure from the group in 2001, the album is not a huge stylistic makeover as the main focus of the band is still trance, techno, and house, although without the thumping beats that defined their previous longplayer ''Beaucoup Fish''. Instead, the album explores more of an ambient and experimental music style. Critical reception ''A Hundred Days Off'' received generally positive reviews from music critics. It has a score of 71/100 on Metacritic based on 18 reviews indicating as "generally favorable reviews".
