Dinah McNabb
Dinah McNabb (died December 1988) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Born in Lurgan, McNabb studied at Queen's University, Belfast. She was elected to Armagh County Council for the Ulster Unionist Party, and was then elected at the 1945 Northern Ireland general election in North Armagh, serving until her retirement in 1969. McNabb was a strong supporter of the Lord's Day Observance Society and throughout the 1940s campaigned against greyhound racing on Sundays, particularly in her home town of Lurgan. McNabb was a bitter opponent of the development of the new town of Craigavon in the area she represented, and was in particular concerned that compensation payments to farmers took no account of their attachment to the land. In February 1966, she gave a thirty-minute speech attacking the project, which culminated in her resignation from the government. Parliament Of Northern Ireland
The Parliament of Northern Ireland was the home rule legislature of Northern Ireland, created under the Government of Ireland Act 1920, which sat from 7 June 1921 to 30 March 1972, when it was suspended because of its inability to restore order during The Troubles, resulting in the introduction of Direct Rule. It was abolished under the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973. The Parliament of Northern Ireland was bicameral, consisting of a House of Commons with 52 seats, and an indirectly elected Senate with 26 seats. The Sovereign was represented by the Governor (initially by the Lord Lieutenant), who granted royal assent to Acts of Parliament in Northern Ireland, but executive power rested with the Prime Minister, the leader of the largest party in the House of Commons. A member of parliament (MP) is the representative in parliament of the people who live in their electoral district. In many countries with bicameral parliaments, this term refers only to members of the lower house since upper house members often have a different title. The terms congressman/congresswoman or deputy are equivalent terms used in other jurisdictions. The term parliamentarian is also sometimes used for members of parliament, but this may also be used to refer to unelected government officials with specific roles in a parliament and other expert advisers on parliamentary procedure such as the Senate Parliamentarian in the United States. The House of Commons of Northern Ireland was the lower chamber of the bicameral Parliament of Northern Ireland. The Parliament was created under the Government of Ireland Act 1920, and first met after a general election held on 24 May 1921. Parliament was suspended on 30 March 1972, when the Northern Ireland (Temporary Provisions) Act 1972 imposed direct rule from London, and was formally abolished on 18 July 1973 under the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973. A year or annus is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun.
