Dimension X (video Game)
''Dimension X'' is a first person action game for the Atari 8-bit family released in 1984 by Synapse Software. It was designed by Steve Hales, who previously wrote ''Slime'' and ''Fort Apocalypse'' for Synapse. ''Dimension X'' is a vehicle-based, first person shooter with similar gameplay to Atari's '' Battlezone'' and Novagen's ''Encounter'' (the latter of which was distributed in the US by Synapse). The manual includes instructions for a Commodore 64 version of the game, but it was never completed nor released. The game was advertised far in advance of its release. Magazine ads emphasized features which did not exist or were not as impressive in the final game which contributed to a negative reception. Gameplay The game is played from a first person perspective, where the player sits inside the cockpit of a flying vehicle and fires missiles at "Regillian" enemies. Synapse Software
Synapse Software Corporation (marketed as SynSoft in the UK) was an American video game development and publishing company founded in 1981 by Ihor Wolosenko and Ken Grant. It initially focused on the Atari 8-bit family, then later developed for the Commodore 64 and other systems. The company was purchased by Broderbund in late 1984, and the Synapse label retired in 1985. After some initial releases directly based on existing games, such as clones of Sega's '' Head On'' and a variant of Atari Inc's ''Avalanche'', 1982's '' Shamus'' established Synapse as a creator of high quality action games. In the nervous system, a synapse is a structure that permits a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron or to the target effector cell. Synapses are essential to the transmission of nervous impulses from one neuron to another. ''ANALOG Computing'' (an acronym for Atari Newsletter And Lots Of Games) was an American computer magazine devoted to the Atari 8-bit family of home computers. It was published from 1981 until 1989. In addition to reviews and tutorials, ''ANALOG'' printed multiple programs in each issue for users to type in. The magazine had a reputation for listings of machine language games–much smoother than those written in Atari BASIC—and which were uncommon in competing magazines. Such games were accompanied by the assembly language source code. ''ANALOG'' also sold commercial games, two books of type-in software, and access to a custom bulletin-board system. ''Star Raiders'' is a first-person space combat simulator for the Atari 8-bit family of computers. It was written by Doug Neubauer, an Atari employee, and released as a cartridge by Atari in March 1980. The game is considered the platform's killer app. It was later ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Atari ST.
