Poibrene Heights
Poibrene Heights are the heights rising to 948 m (Dimcha Peak) on Oscar II Coast, Graham Land in Antarctica. They are extending 18 km in northwest-southeast direction and 10 km wide, and surmounting Evans Glacier (Graham Land), Evans Glacier to the north, Vaughan Inlet to the northeast, the coastal Whiteside Hill to the east, Foyn Point to the southeast, Kunino Point and Exasperation Inlet to the south, and Punchbowl Glacier to the southwest. The heights are separated from Forbidden Plateau (Antarctica), Forbidden Plateau by Vishna Pass. The feature is named after the settlement of Poibrene in southern Bulgaria. Blagoevgrad Peninsula
Blagoevgrad Peninsula ( bg, полуостров Благоевград, poluostrov Blagoevgrad, ) is the mostly ice-covered peninsula projecting 15 km in southeast direction from Oscar II Coast in Graham Land, Antarctica, and 17 km wide. It is bounded by Vaughan Inlet to the north and Exasperation Inlet to the south, ending in Foyn Point to the southeast. The east coast of the peninsula is indented by Yamforina Cove, and its interior is partly occupied by the southeast portion of Poibrene Heights. It was formed as a result of the break-up of Larsen Ice Shelf in the area in 2002, and subsequent retreat of the adjacent Evans Glacier and Punchbowl Glacier. The feature is named after the city of Blagoevgrad in southwestern Bulgaria. Location Blagoevgrad Peninsula is located at . SCAR Antarctic Digital Database mapping in 2012. Oscar II Coast
Oscar II Coast is that portion of the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula between Cape Fairweather to the north, and Cape Alexander to the south. Discovered in 1893 by Captain C.A. Larsen, who named it for King Oscar II of Norway and Sweden. To the north of this coast is Nordenskjöld Coast The Nordenskjöld Coast (64° 30' S 60° 30' W) is located on the Antarctic Peninsula, more specifically Graham Land, which is the top region of the Peninsula. The Peninsula is a thin, long ice sheet with an Alpine-style mountain chain. The coast .... Further reading * Alan Nairn, 'The South Atlantic, Volume 1'', P 192 * Gunter Faure, Teresa M. Graham Land
Graham Land is the portion of the Antarctic Peninsula that lies north of a line joining Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz. This description of Graham Land is consistent with the 1964 agreement between the British Antarctic Place-names Committee and the US Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names, in which the name "Antarctic Peninsula" was approved for the major peninsula of Antarctica, and the names Graham Land and Palmer Land for the northern and southern portions, respectively. The line dividing them is roughly 69 degrees south. Graham Land is named after Sir James R. G. Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of John Biscoe's exploration of the west side of Graham Land in 1832. It is claimed by Argentina (as part of Argentine Antarctica), Britain (as part of the British Antarctic Territory) and Chile (as part of the Chilean Antarctic Territory). Graham Land is the closest part of Antarctica to South America. Thus it is the usual destination for small ships taking paying ... Antarctica
Antarctica () is Earth's southernmost and least-populated continent. Situated almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean, it contains the geographic South Pole. Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent, being about 40% larger than Europe, and has an area of . Most of Antarctica is covered by the Antarctic ice sheet, with an average thickness of . Antarctica is, on average, the coldest, driest, and windiest of the continents, and it has the highest average elevation. It is mainly a polar desert, with annual precipitation of over along the coast and far less inland. About 70% of the world's freshwater reserves are frozen in Antarctica, which, if melted, would raise global sea levels by almost . Antarctica holds the record for the lowest measured temperature on Earth, . The coastal regions can reach temperatures over in summer. Native species of animals include mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Where vegetation o ... Bulgaria
Bulgaria (; bg, България, Bǎlgariya), officially the Republic of Bulgaria,, ) is a country in Southeast Europe. It is situated on the eastern flank of the Balkans, and is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. Bulgaria covers a territory of , and is the sixteenth-largest country in Europe. Sofia is the nation's capital and largest city; other major cities are Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas. One of the earliest societies in the lands of modern-day Bulgaria was the Neolithic Karanovo culture, which dates back to 6,500 BC. In the 6th to 3rd century BC the region was a battleground for ancient Thracians, Persians, Celts and Macedonians; stability came when the Roman Empire conquered the region in AD 45. After the Roman state splintered, tribal invasions in the region resumed. Around the 6th century, these territories were settled by the early Slavs. The Bulgars, led by Asp ... Whiteside Hill
Whiteside Hill () is an ice-covered hill rising to 330 m on Blagoevgrad Peninsula on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. An offshoot of the hill ending 3 km to the northeast forms the southwest side of the entrance to Vaughan Inlet. This area was observed from the air by Sir Hubert Wilkins on December 20, 1928. The feature was first charted as a point during 1947 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). In 1955, FIDS reported that the point is not marked by any rock exposures and merges so gradually with the ice of Evans Glacier that the hill is the feature to which the name should be applied. The descriptive name was given by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (or UK-APC) is a United Kingdom government committee, part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, responsible for recommending names of geographical locations within the British Antarctic Territory (BAT) and ... Scientific Committee On Antarctic Research
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is an interdisciplinary body of the International Science Council (ISC). SCAR coordinates international scientific research efforts in Antarctica, including the Southern Ocean. SCAR's scientific work is administered through several discipline-themed ''science groups''. The organisation has observer status at, and provides independent advice to Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings, and also provides information to other international bodies such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). History At the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU)’s Antarctic meeting held in Stockholm from 9–11 September 1957, it was agreed that a committee should be created to oversee scientific research in Antarctica. At the time there were 12 nations actively conducting Antarctic research and they were each invited to nominate one delegate to ...
