Dietrich Lohmann
Dietrich Lohmann, B.V.K. (German Society of Cinematographers; 9 March 1943 – 13 November 1997) was a German cinematographer. He was born in Schnepfenthal, Waltershausen, Thuringia, Germany. He studied at the Staatliche Fachschule für Optik und Fototechnik in Berlin. After graduating he entered Olympia-Film in Munich and worked with Thomas Mauch, and he became a key cinematographer of New German Cinema. He is prominent for his collaboration with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. He went to the US in 1988, and photographed Hollywood films such as '' The Innocent'', ''Color of Night'', '' A Couch in New York,'' '' The Peacemaker'' and '' Deep Impact''. He won at the German Film Awards in 1970, and at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards in 1989. On November 13, 1997, Lohmann died from leukemia, aged 54. Waltershausen is a town in the south-western part of the district of Gotha in the state of Thuringia, Germany. Geography Geographic location Located on the verge of the Thuringian Basin just before the Thuringian Forest, Waltershausen is sometimes referred to as the "gate to the Thuringian Forest". It is close to the Großer Inselsberg, the fourth-highest mountain in the state. The German Film Award (), also known as Lola after its prize statuette, is the national film award of Germany. It is presented at an annual ceremony honouring cinematic achievements in the German film industry. Besides being the most important film award in Germany, it is also the most highly endowed German cultural award, with cash prizes in its current 20 categories totalling nearly three million euros. ''Rio das Mortes'' is a 1971 color film written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. One of the early Fassbinder films it stars Hanna Schygulla as Hanna, as Michael/Mike and Günther Kaufmann as Gunther. Plot summary Mike and Gunther lead a boring life in Munich. Hanna, Mike's girl friend, wants to get married but he is not interested. The two friends get hold of a treasure map of the Rio das Mortes area and decide to set out to find it in Peru. They are looking for freedom and adventure. Against Hanna's opposition, the car is sold, and the two men try to raise money. Their ignorance and clumsiness seems to lead to failure, but eventually, by luck, they find a sponsor.
