''The Doll'' (german: Die Puppe) is a 1919 German romantic fantasy comedy film directed by Ernst Lubitsch. The film is based on the operetta ''La poupée'' by Edmond Audran (1896) and a line of influence back through the Léo Delibes ballet ''Coppélia'' (1870) and ultimately to E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story "Der Sandmann" (1816). Plot summary Lancelot is the nephew of the Baron, his uncle. The Baron is pressuring him to get married but Lancelot is afraid of women. He decides to fool his uncle by marrying a life-like mechanical doll instead. Homotopy Theory
In mathematics, homotopy theory is a systematic study of situations in which maps can come with homotopies between them. It originated as a topic in algebraic topology but nowadays is studied as an independent discipline. Besides algebraic topology, the theory has also been used in other areas of mathematics such as algebraic geometry (e.g., A1 homotopy theory) and category theory (specifically the study of higher categories). Concepts Spaces and maps In homotopy theory and algebraic topology, the word "space" denotes a topological space. In order to avoid pathologies, one rarely works with arbitrary spaces; instead, one requires spaces to meet extra constraints, such as being compactly generated, or Hausdorff, or a CW complex. Winfried Scharlau (Mathematiker)
Winfried Scharlau (12 August 1940, in Berlin – 26 November 2020) was a German mathematician. Biography Scharlau received his doctorate in 1967 from the University of Bonn. His doctoral thesis ''Quadratische Formen und Galois-Cohomologie'' (Quadratic Forms and Galois Cohomology) was supervised by Friedrich Hirzebruch. Scharlau was at the Institute for Advanced Study for the academic year 1969–1970 and in spring 1972. From 1970 he was a professor (most recent ''Institutsdirektor'') at the University of Münster, from where he retired. Scharlau's research deals with number theory and, in particular, the theory of quadratic forms, about which he wrote a 1985 monograph ''Quadratic and Hermitian Forms'' in Springer's series ''Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften''. Friedrich Hirzebruch
Friedrich Ernst Peter Hirzebruch ForMemRS (17 October 1927 – 27 May 2012) was a German mathematician, working in the fields of topology, complex manifolds and algebraic geometry, and a leading figure in his generation. He has been described as "the most important mathematician in Germany of the postwar period." Education Hirzebruch was born in Hamm, Westphalia in 1927. His father of the same name was a maths teacher. Hirzebruch studied at the University of Münster from 1945–1950, with one year at ETH Zürich. Career Hirzebruch then held a position at Erlangen, followed by the years 1952–54 at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. After one year at Princeton University 1955–56, he was made a professor at the University of Bonn, where he remained, becoming director of the ''Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik'' in 1981. ''Mathematische Annalen'' (abbreviated as ''Math. Ann.'' or, formerly, ''Math. Annal.'') is a German mathematical research journal founded in 1868 by Alfred Clebsch and Carl Neumann. Subsequent managing editors were Felix Klein, David Hilbert, Otto Blumenthal, Erich Hecke, Heinrich Behnke, Hans Grauert, Heinz Bauer, Herbert Amann, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Wolfgang Lück, and Nigel Hitchin. Currently, the managing editor of Mathematische Annalen is Thomas Schick. Volumes 1–80 (1869–1919) were published by Teubner. Since 1920 (vol. 81), the journal has been published by Springer. In the late 1920s, under the editorship of Hilbert, the journal became embroiled in controversy over the participation of L. E. J. Brouwer on its editorial board, a spillover from the foundational Brouwer–Hilbert controversy. Between 1945 and 1947 the journal briefly ceased publication. Lecture Notes In Mathematics
''Lecture Notes in Mathematics'' is a book series in the field of mathematics, including articles related to both research and teaching. It was established in 1964 and was edited by A. Dold, Heidelberg and B. Eckmann, Zürich. Its publisher is Springer Science+Business Media (formerly Springer-Verlag). The intent of the series is to publish not only lecture notes, but results from seminars and conferences, more quickly than the several-years-long process of publishing polished journal papers in mathematics. In order to speed the publication process, early volumes of the series (before electronic publishing) were reproduced photographically from typewritten manuscripts. According to Earl Taft it has been "enormously successful" and "is considered a very valuable service to the mathematical community". there have been 2232 volumes in this series. Tammo tom Dieck (29 May 1938, São Paulo) is a German mathematician, specializing in algebraic topology. Tammo tom Dieck studied mathematics from 1957 at the University of Göttingen and at Saarland University, where he received his promotion (Ph.D.) in 1964 under Dieter Puppe with thesis ''Zur K-Theorie und ihren Kohomologie-Operationen''. In 1969 tom Dieck received his habilitation at Heidelberg University under Albrecht Dold. From 1970 to 1975 he was a professor at Saarland University. In 1975 he became a professor at the University of Göttingen. Tammo tom Dieck is a world-class expert in algebraic topology and author of several widely-used textbooks in topology. He has done research on Lie groups, G-structures, and cobordism. In the 1990s and 2000s, his research dealt with knot theory (and its algebras) and quantum groups.
