François Diederich
François Diederich (9 July 1952, in Ettelbruck – 23 September 2020) was a Luxembourgian chemist specializing in organic chemistry. Education He obtained both his diploma and PhD (first synthesis of Kekulene) from the University of Heidelberg in 1977 and 1979, respectively. Career and research After postdoctoral studies with Orville L. Chapman at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and habilitation at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, he became Full Professor of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry at UCLA in 1989. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at ETH Zurich. He retired on 31 July 2017, and remained a research-active professor at ETH Zurich. On 16 March 2019, the German Chemical Society (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) bestowed him with their highest recognition, Honorary Membership. Bernard Diederich
Bernard Diederich (18 July 1926 – 14 January 2020) was a New Zealand-born author, journalist, and historian. Diederich was born into an Irish-German family in Christchurch, where his father was a barman at the Empire Hotel. The family moved to rural Mākara, near Wellington, when he was 2, and he lived there until he was 16. In 2002 he wrote ''The Ghosts of Makara: Growing Up Down-Under in a Lost World of Yesteryears'' about his childhood. He attended Makara Primary School, then Marist Brothers' School in Thorndon and St Patrick's College, Kilbirnie, Wellington, St Patrick's College for two years in the early 1940s, playing in the 1st XV rugby team and representing the school in boxing. Diederich left school aged 16 to become a shipping clerk to prepare to join the crew of the barque ''Pamir (ship), Pamir'', which left for San Francisco in early 1943. The J. William & Mary Diederich College of Communication (or simply Diederich College of Communication) is one of the primary colleges at Marquette University, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The college is named for J. William Diederich, a former executive at Landmark Media Enterprises, and his wife, Mary. History The College of Communication was founded in 1910 as the School of Journalism. Decades later, the School of Journalism merged with the Schools of Performing Arts, Speech and Communication to form what is now the College of Communication. Bim Diederich
Jean "Bim" Diederich (20 February 1922 – 6 December 2012) was a professional Luxembourgian road bicycle racer, with an impressive record in the Tour de France. Diederich was born in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, and was active in competition from 1946 to 1954. He finished sixth in the road race at the 1947 Road World Championships. He had fourteen wins, including stage wins in the 1950 Tour de France (finishing in Menton), the 1951 Tour de France (from Reims to Ghent, leading the race solo over the Muur van Geraardsbergen before crossing the finish line, earning the nickname "Le Duc de Grammont" or "the Duke of Geraardsbergen"), and the 1952 Tour de France (into Namur). Jason Andrew Diederich is a below-knee amputee Australian Paralympic swimmer. He participated in the 1988 Seoul Paralympics and won a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics in the Men's 100 m Butterfly S10 event. At the age of 23, in 1994 he completed his first solo Rottnest Channel Swim and has undertaken the swim several times since. Diederich Hinrichsen (born 17 February 1939) is a German mathematician who, together with Hans W. Knobloch, established the field of dynamical systems theory and control theory in Germany. Life and work Diederich Hinrichsen was born in 1939, and studied mathematics, physics, literature, philosophy, and economics from 1958 to 1965 in Hamburg. In 1966 he got his PhD at the University of Erlangen under the supervision of Heinz Bauer. His main research area at that time was abstract potential theory, with special focus on extensions of the Cauchy-Weil theorem to the Choquet boundary. After research visits in Paris and Hamburg, he went to Havana where he helped to re-establish mathematics in Cuba.
