Didemnidae
Didemnidae, or Didemnidæ, is a family of colonial tunicates in the order Enterogona. These marine animals are found in shallow water on the seabed. Members of this family have small zooids that form encrusting colonies. The body of each zooid is divided into a thorax and an abdomen. Systematics The World Register of Marine Species lists the following genera: * '' Atriolum'' Kott, 1983 * ''Clitella'' Kott, 2001 * '' Coelocormus'' Herdman, 1886 * '' Didemnum'' Savigny, 1816 * '' Diplosoma'' Macdonald, 1859 * '' Leptoclinides'' Bjerkan, 1905 * ''Lissoclinum'' Verrill, 1871 * ''Polysyncraton'' Nott, 1891 * '' Trididemnum'' Della Valle, 1881 Gallery Image:Atriolum robustum Maldives.JPG, '' Atriolum robustum'' Image:Didemnum molle.jpeg, '' Didemnum molle'' Image:Diplosoma spongiforme (Giard, 1872) 5.jpg, '' Diplosoma spongiforme'' Image:Lissoclinum patellum.jpg, '' Lissoclinum patellum'' Image:Polysyncraton bilobatum Lafargue, 1968.jpg, ''Polysyncraton bilobatum ''Polysyncr ...

Didemnum
''Didemnum'' is a genus of colonial tunicates in the family Didemnidae. It is the most speciose genus in the didemnid family. Species in this genus often have small calcareous spicules embedded in the tunic and form irregular or lobed colonies. Some ''Didemnum'' species, including '' Didemnum vexillum'' and '' Didemnum perlucidem'' are considered invasive species. In early 2006, ''Didemnum vexillum'' was found covering a 230 km2 area of cobble habitat in Georges Bank off the coast of New England, and is classified as an invasive species of greatest concern in coastal areas throughout Europe, New Zealand, and North America. ''Didemnum'' sp. invasions have also been recorded in Canada, the Mediterranean, and the Netherlands. Species in this genus can be found in tropical or temperate regions. Some tropical species such as '' Didemnum molle'' have photosynthetic algae in their tunics. Species The following species are recognised in the genus ''Didemnum'': *'' Didemnum abradat ...

Didemnin
Didemnins are cyclic depsipeptide compounds isolated from a tunicate (ascidian, or sea-squirt) of the genus '' Trididemnum'' (family of Didemnidæ) that were collected in the Caribbean Sea. They were first isolated in 1978 at the University of Illinois. Although more than nine didemnins (didemnins A-E, G, X and Y) have been isolated from the extract of ''Trididemnum solidum'', didemnin B is the one that possesses the most potent biological activities. It is a strong antiviral agent against both DNA and RNA viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1, a strong immunosuppressant that shows some potential in skin graft and is also very cytotoxic. It shows strong activity against murine leukemia cells. Large amounts of didemnin B were chemically synthesized and it was advanced to clinical trials by the National Cancer Institute. It has completed phase II human clinical trials against adenocarcinoma of the kidney, advanced epithelial ovarian cancer, and metastatic breast cancer. ...

Didemnum Molle
''Didemnum molle'' is a species of colonial tunicate in the family Didemnidae. It is commonly known as the tall urn ascidian, the green barrel sea squirt or the green reef sea-squirt. It is native to the Red Sea and the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Description A colony of ''Didemnum molle'' is composed of a number of linked zooids adhering to the substrate. Each individual zooid has a plump, urn-shaped body with a diameter of up to . The tunic (body wall) is made of a cellulose-like substance that is strong but flexible, and is perforated by numerous small holes, the buccal siphons, through which water is drawn into the body. At the top of the body is the large atrial siphon through which water flows out. The tunic is strengthened by the presence of many spherical calcareous spicules which are particularly concentrated round the neck of the urn. The colony is white, brown or green, or some combination of these colours. This hue is due to the symbiotic blue-gre ...

Atriolum Robustum
''Atriolum robustum'' is a colonial tunicate or sea squirt in the family ''Didemnidae''. It is native to the western and central Indo-Pacific where it is usually found anchored to a hard surface in shallow water. Description A colony of ''Atriolum robustum'' consists of a number of hollow, urn-shaped zooids up to long, each with a large circular terminal hole, the atrial siphon, and connected by an encrusting base. The tunic (body wall) is firm to the touch and is perforated by a number of pore-like buccal siphons, each raised on a slight elevation, giving the zooid a pine cone-like appearance. The tunic contains a red pigment but the colour of this is often masked by the presence of yellowish-green cyanobacteria (''Prochloron'' sp.) and may only be visible in the interior and at the rim of the atrial syphon. This sea squirt is sometimes confused with ''Didemnum molle'' but that species has a network of internal channels and exudes mucus, making it sticky to the touch. Distribu ...

Tunicate
A tunicate is a marine invertebrate animal, a member of the subphylum Tunicata (). It is part of the Chordata, a phylum which includes all animals with dorsal nerve cords and notochords (including vertebrates). The subphylum was at one time called Urochordata, and the term urochordates is still sometimes used for these animals. They are the only chordates that have lost their myomeric segmentation, with the possible exception of the 'seriation of the gill slits'. Some tunicates live as solitary individuals, but others replicate by budding and become colonies, each unit being known as a zooid. They are marine filter feeders with a water-filled, sac-like body structure and two tubular openings, known as siphons, through which they draw in and expel water. During their respiration and feeding, they take in water through the incurrent (or inhalant) siphon and expel the filtered water through the excurrent (or exhalant) siphon. Most adult tunicates are sessile, immobile and perman ...

Enterogona
Ascidiacea, commonly known as the ascidians, tunicates (in part), and sea squirts (in part), is a polyphyletic class in the subphylum Tunicata of sac-like marine invertebrate filter feeders. Ascidians are characterized by a tough outer "tunic" made of a polysaccharide. Ascidians are found all over the world, usually in shallow water with salinities over 2.5%. While members of the Thaliacea and Larvacea (Appendicularia) swim freely like plankton, sea squirts are sessile animals after their larval phase: they then remain firmly attached to their substratum, such as rocks and shells. There are 2,300 species of ascidians and three main types: solitary ascidians, social ascidians that form clumped communities by attaching at their bases, and compound ascidians that consist of many small individuals (each individual is called a zooid) forming colonies up to several meters in diameter. Sea squirts feed by taking in water through a tube, the oral siphon. The water enters the mout ...
