Dick Hodgins, Jr.
Dick Hodgins Jr. (May 9, 1931 – April 3, 2016) was an American cartoonist whose work included illustration, comic strips, and political cartoons. Career Born in Binghamton, NY, the Hodgins family moved to Queens, NY. Dick, the son of Orlando Sentinel cartoonist, Dick Hodgins Sr., was twelve years old when a sale to the now defunct New York Mirror for one dollar spurred him to a cartoon career. After attending the School of Visual Arts and Military Service (editing and drawing for a base newspaper in Osaka, Japan and contributing to Pacific Stars and Stripes) Hodgins returned to the educational film industry. He then joined the Associated Press illustrating feature news stories. Hank Ketcham, creator of Dennis the Menace, selected Hodgins to draw his second comic strip " Half Hitch" for King Features Syndicate. ''Half Hitch'' is an American comic strip by Hank Ketcham, in syndication first between 1943 and 1945 and later from 1970 to 1975. It is an example of military humor, but unlike most cartoons and comics of this genre, is focused on the navy, rather than the army. The unnamed character first appeared in ''The Saturday Evening Post'' in 1943. During World War II, Hank Ketcham served in the U.S. Navy. During his service, he created a comic strip for the amusement of his fellow sailors, following the adventures of a short, lecherous sailor and his friends. It was published in ''The Saturday Evening Post'' where it became popular. The strip ceased in 1945, but after the great success of '' Dennis the Menace'', Ketcham revived it as ''Half Hitch''. The National Cartoonists Society (NCS) is an organization of professional cartoonists in the United States. It presents the National Cartoonists Society Awards. The Society was born in 1946 when groups of cartoonists got together to entertain the troops. They enjoyed each other's company and decided to meet on a regular basis. NCS members work in many branches of the profession, including advertising, animation, newspaper comic strips and syndicated single-panel cartoons, comic books, editorial cartoons, gag cartoons, graphic novels, greeting cards, magazine and book illustration. Richard Arthur Allan Browne (August 11, 1917 – June 4, 1989) was an American cartoonist, best known for writing and drawing ''Hägar the Horrible'' and ''Hi and Lois''. Biography Browne attended Cooper Union and got his start at the ''New York Journal-American'' as a copy boy and later worked in the art department. He also worked as a courtroom sketch artist for the paper, covering the Lucky Luciano trial. He joined the army, producing work for the engineering unit and created ''Ginny Jeep'', a comic strip about the Women's Army Corps. During World War II, he was assigned to draw maps and charts for an Army engineering unit, eventually rising to staff sergeant. In his spare time, he created the comic "Ginny Jeep", appearing in Army and Air Force newspapers. In the 1940s, he worked as an illustrator for ''Newsweek'' as well as for an advertising company, where he created the trademark logo for Chiquita. ''Henry'' is a (the funniest living American) comic strip created in 1932 by Carl Thomas Anderson. The title character is a young bald boy who is mute (and sometimes drawn minus a mouth). With the exception of a few early episodes, the comic strip character communicates largely but not entirely through pantomime, a situation which changed when Henry moved into comic books. Henry has spoken in at least one Betty Boop cartoon from 1935. In the feature Betty Boop has a pet shop and Henry speaks to a dog in the window. ''The Saturday Evening Post'' was the first publication to feature ''Henry'', a series which began when Anderson was 67 years old.
