Dick Fenton-Smith
Richard Edward Fenton-Smith (19 October 1931 – 11 April 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. Prior to starting with Melbourne Fenton-Smith played with the 1954 QANFL premiership Western Districts team. Recruited from Ormond Amateur Football Club, Fenton-Smith played in many positions in his brief career including the ruck and defence. He kicked 18 of his 21 goals in his debut season and played in two Melbourne premiership teams. In 1960 he moved to Adelaide and played with Sturt in the South Australian National Football League. Ormond Amateur Football Club
Ormond Amateur Football Club is an Australian rules football club, located 14 km south east of Melbourne in the suburb of Ormond. Ormond is the second-oldest suburban club in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The club was founded in 1931 by Leslie Edward Smith. In 2008 Ormond welcomed back recently retired AFL player Matthew Robbins as player and assistant coach. After competing in B grade in season 2009, Ormond were narrowly relegated and subsequently moved down to C grade for 2010. In 2008 the Club won the C Grade premiership, defeating Hampton Rovers 15.12 (102 points) to 9.10 (64 points). History The club was founded in the early years of the Great Depression. Australian rules football was one of two demonstration sports at the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stipulated that each Summer Olympics host must organise both a "national" game and a sport "foreign" to the organising country as "demonstration sports". Australian football was chosen as the national sport, while baseball was chosen as the foreign sport. In accordance with Olympic eligibility rules, participants were restricted to amateurs, which forced organisers to select squads made up of young stars, ageing veterans and suburban-league athletes. Victorian Amateur Football Association
The Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) is the largest senior community Australian rules football competition in Victoria. It consists of seven senior men's and women's divisions ranging from Premier to Division 4. In addition there are U19's sections and five Thirds sections, primarily made up of either clubs only able to field one team, or clubs from higher sections that can field a third team after their seniors and reserves. The league operates a double promotion and relegation system between sections with various rules dictating which section clubs can play in.
