Dick Cruikshanks (1874 – March 3, 1947) was a South African actor and director. His work includes five short comedies filmed in 1917, three of them with African actors. ''De Voortrekkers'' is a 1916 silent film recognized as the first epic in South Africa's motion-picture history and also that nation's oldest surviving feature film. Produced by African Film Productions and directed by Harold M. Shaw, it portrays the Boers' "Great Trek" of the 1830s, concluding with a hegemonic recreation of the Battle of Blood River that occurred on 16 December 1838, when a few hundred armed Afrikaners defeated several thousand Zulus. Descendants of the Dutch-speaking ''voortrekkers'' or "pioneers" who participated in the Great Trek revered the film and used it to commemorate the event, which forms part of a highly contentious period in South Africa's history. Piet Retief
Pieter Mauritz Retief (12 November 1780 – 6 February 1838) was a ''Voortrekker'' leader. Settling in 1814 in the frontier region of the Cape Colony, he assumed command of punitive expeditions in response to raiding parties from the adjacent Xhosa territory. He became a spokesperson for the frontier farmers who voiced their discontent, and wrote the Voortrekkers' declaration at their departure from the colony. He was a leading figure during their Great Trek, and at one stage their elected governor. He proposed Natal as the final destination of their migration and selected a location for its future capital, later named Pietermaritzburg in his honour. The massacre of Retief and his delegation by the Zulu King Dingane and the extermination of several Voortrekker laagercamps in the area of the present town of Weenen led to the Battle of Blood River on the Ncome River. ''The Blue Lagoon'' is a 1923 silent film adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole's 1908 novel of the same name about children who come of age while stranded on a tropical island. It is the first screen adaptation of the story and was followed by two other adaptations that were released in 1949 and 1980. Plot The story follows the journey of two children, Dick and Emmeline Lestrange, who are shipwrecked on a desert island with an old servant named Paddy Button. Paddy takes care of the children until he discovers a stash of rum, which leads to his death from alcohol poisoning. As the children grow up on the island, they remain ignorant of sex until a chance blow awakens their sexuality.
