Diaulula Odonoghuei
''Diaulula odonoghuei'', the spotted leopard dorid, is a species of dorid nudibranch found in the Pacific Ocean. Identified as a cryptic species in 2016, it is differentiated from its sister species ''Diaulula sandiegensis'' by having considerably more spots on their mantle. Description This nudibranch grows to about 100 mm (4") in length with many spots covering its mantle, this pattern can extend all the way to the edge of the mantle, a defining characteristic of this cryptic species Distribution This dorid nudibranch ranges from the sea of japan to northern California. Life habits This species feeds on sponges Sponges, the members of the phylum Porifera (; meaning 'pore bearer'), are a basal animal clade as a sister of the diploblasts. They are multicellular organisms that have bodies full of pores and channels allowing water to circulate through .... ''References'' odonoghuei Gastropods described in 1963 {{Discodori ...

Doridoidea
Doridoidea, commonly known as dorid nudibranchs (and previously known as the taxon Cryptobranchia), are a taxonomic superfamily of medium to large, shell-less sea slugs, marine gastropod mollusks in the clade Doridacea, included in the clade Nudibranchia. Etymology The word "Doridoidea" comes from the generic name ''Doris'', which was in turn copied from the name of the sea nymph, Doris, in Greek mythology. Families According to the Taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005), families within the superfamily Doridoidea include: * Actinocyclidae O'Donoghue, 1929 * Chromodorididae Bergh, 1891 * Discodorididae Bergh, 1891 * Dorididae Rafinesque, 1815 Changes later than 2005 The family Cadlinidae Bergh, 1891 was considered a synonym of the Chromodorididae. Research by R.F. Johnson in 2011 has shown that ''Cadlina'' does not belong to the family Chromodorididae. She has therefore brought back the name ''Cadlinidae'' from synonymy with ''Chromodorididae''. The chromodori ...

Nudibranch
Nudibranchs () are a group of soft-bodied marine gastropod molluscs which shed their shells after their larval stage. They are noted for their often extraordinary colours and striking forms, and they have been given colourful nicknames to match, such as "clown", "marigold", "splendid", "dancer", "dragon", or "sea rabbit". Currently, about 3,000 valid species of nudibranchs are known.Ocean Portal (2017)A Collage of Nudibranch Colors Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Retrieved 17 April 2018. The word "nudibranch" comes from the Latin "naked" and the Ancient Greek () "gills". Nudibranchs are often casually called sea slugs, as they are a family of opistobranchs (sea slugs), within the phylum Mollusca (molluscs), but many sea slugs belong to several taxonomic groups which are not closely related to nudibranchs. A number of these other sea slugs, such as the photosynthetic ''Sacoglossa'' and the colourful Aglajidae, are often confused with nudibranchs. Distribut ...

Diaulula Sandiegensis
''Diaulula sandiegensis'' is a species of sea slug, a dorid nudibranch, a shell-less marine gastropod mollusc in the family Discodorididae. The specific epithet ''sandiegensis'' means: "of San Diego", the Southern California city. Distribution This dorid nudibranch occurs in the eastern Pacific, from Barkley Sound, British Columbia to Baja California, Mexico. It has been confused with '' Diaulula boreopacifica'' which has a more northerly range and also occurs in Japan and Russia.Lindsay, T., Kelly, J., Chichvarkhin, A., Craig, S., Kajihara, H., Mackie, J & Valdés, A. (2016). ''Changing spots: pseudocryptic speciation in the North Pacific dorid nudibranch ''Diaulula sandiegensis'' (Cooper, 1862) (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia).'' Journal of Molluscan Studies doi:10.1093/mollus/eyw026 Description This nudibranch grows to about 100 mm (4") in length. The background color can be white or any shade of yellow to a yellowish brown, and it has characteristic markings consisting of a ...

Sponges
Sponges, the members of the phylum Porifera (; meaning 'pore bearer'), are a basal animal clade as a sister of the diploblasts. They are multicellular organisms that have bodies full of pores and channels allowing water to circulate through them, consisting of jelly-like mesohyl sandwiched between two thin layers of cells. Sponges have unspecialized cells that can transform into other types and that often migrate between the main cell layers and the mesohyl in the process. Sponges do not have nervous, digestive or circulatory systems. Instead, most rely on maintaining a constant water flow through their bodies to obtain food and oxygen and to remove wastes. Sponges were first to branch off the evolutionary tree from the last common ancestor of all animals, making them the sister group of all other animals. Etymology The term ''sponge'' derives from the Ancient Greek word ( 'sponge'). Overview Sponges are similar to other animals in that they are multicellular, h ...
