Diascund, Virginia
Diascund was a railway stop, unincorporated community, and post office in Virginia located at milepost 47 on the Peninsula Extension of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in James City County. When this rail line was built in 1881, stations were established every few miles. To the west was the Lanexa station, and four miles to the east, Toano. The depot was east of the railroad’s crossing of Diascund Creek near the current Diascund Road. Peninsula Extension
The Peninsula Extension which created the Peninsula Subdivision of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) was the new railroad line on the Virginia Peninsula from Richmond to southeastern Warwick County. Its principal purpose was to provide an important new pathway for coal mined in West Virginia to reach the harbor of Hampton Roads for coastal and export shipping on collier ships. Completed on October 16, 1881, the new double-tracked railroad and the other development visions of industrialist Collis Potter Huntington resulted in a 15-year transition of the rural farm village of Newport News into a new independent city which also became home to the world's largest shipyard. The railroad, one of the later developed in Virginia, became important to many communities, opening transportation options, and stimulating commerce and military operations on the Peninsula throughout the 20th century. Chesapeake And Ohio Railway
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway was a Class I railroad formed in 1869 in Virginia from several smaller Virginia railroads begun in the 19th century. Led by industrialist Collis P. Huntington, it reached from Virginia's capital city of Richmond to the Ohio River by 1873, where the railroad town (and later city) of Huntington, West Virginia, was named for him. Tapping the coal reserves of West Virginia, the C&O's Peninsula Extension to new coal piers on the harbor of Hampton Roads resulted in the creation of the new City of Newport News. Coal revenues also led the forging of a rail link to the Midwest, eventually reaching Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo in Ohio and Chicago, Illinois. By the early 1960s the C&O was headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. Lanexa is an unincorporated community partially in New Kent County, and partially in James City County, Virginia, United States. The ZIP Code for Lanexa is 23089. Lanexa is located by the Chickahominy River and has many tourism sites for camping and outdoor activities. Diascund Creek runs immediately to the east of the center of Lanexa. A dam creates the Diascund Creek Reservoir on the north side of the community. Toano, formerly Burnt Ordinary, is an unincorporated community in James City County, Virginia, United States. It is in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District History Toano was established in the late 19th century in western James City County at the former site of "Burnt Ordinary", which was named in the 18th century for a roadside tavern that had burned down. The word Toano comes from a Native Americans of the United States, Native American word meaning "high ground". In 1881, the Peninsula Extension of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) was built through the area from Richmond to reach the coal piers on Hampton Roads at the new city of Newport News. Diascund Creek
Diascund Creek is the major tributary of the Chickahominy River in Virginia, part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The creek flows south and forms the border between New Kent County on the west and James City County on the east. In 1963, an earthen dam was constructed across the creek above Lanexa to create a 1,100 acre reservoir for Newport News Waterworks. The only public access directly to the creek is from Diascund Reservoir Park part of James City County’s park system. There are also access points for members of local civic associations on both sides of the tidal creek. Since at least colonial times, the creek has been bridged at Lanexa where U.S. Route 60 crosses it. During the Revolutionary War British troops destroyed American naval supplies which were stored there on the night of April 22, 1781. Lee Hall Depot
Lee Hall Depot is a historic train station and museum located in the Lee Hall neighborhood of Newport News, Virginia. It was built in about 1881, with a one-story cargo bay, and the two-story main section was added in 1893. Another one-story wing was added by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway to the north end of the depot in 1918 to handle an influx of military personnel to Fort Eustis.
