Diamond Records was a record label for Hong Kong and the far East. It featured a good amount of Hong Kong's most popular recording acts and attractions in its catalogue. Background Diamond Records was an independent label which was established in or around 1960 by Portuguese merchant, Ren da Silva.HK Pop Histor/ref> In the early 1960s, they produced a run of albums that featured original Mandarin and English compositions. Also English songs were sung in Mandarin and Mandarin songs were sung in English. Two recording artists that were an example of this were Kong Ling and Mona Fong. Kong Ling
Kong Ling was a 1960s Hong Kong based singing star and recording artist who sang Jazz, Cha cha, Rock and roll and Pop music She had also recorded with popular Hong Kong pop group The Fabulous Echoes. Background Kong Ling's real name is Kong Yan Lai. In 1951, singing "Congratulations" she won an inter school competition. She started her professional career in 1954 which led to her touring Singapore for nine months. Due to the success from that she returned to Donkey Kong and was in demand. Along with the Celso Carrillo band, she recorded an album for the Diamond label. The name of the album was ''Hong Kong Presents ..... Off-Beat Cha Cha''. The album was a Jazz / Cha Cha type of record with Carrillo playing piano, conga and cow bell on various tracks. Danny Diaz & The Checkmates were a Filipino rock band, based in Hong Kong in the 1960s. Background They were part of the Hong Kong beat group scene between 1964 and 1969, that included other Hong Kong groups, such as Anders Nelson & The Inspiration, D'Topnotes, Fabulous Echoes, Joe Jr. & The Side Effects, Teddy Robin & The Playboys, Lotus, Magic Carpets, Mod East and Mystics and The Thunderbirds. They entered into a "Battle of the Sound" contest and conquered various groups, and in the final beat Teddy Robin & The Playboys to become the winner. Anders Nelsson is an actor and musician who emerged in the 1960s Hong Kong music scene. He was a member of the popular Hong Kong group The Kontinentals as well as the front man for Anders Nelson & The Inspiration. Samuel Hui Koon-kit (born 6 September 1948), usually known as Sam Hui, is a Hong Kong musician, singer, songwriter and actor. He is credited with popularising Cantopop both via the infusion of Western-style music and his usage of vernacular Cantonese rather than written vernacular Chinese in biting lyrics that addressed contemporary problems and concerns.
