The Diamond Grove Prairie Conservation Area is an 852-acre natural area located adjacent to the Missouri municipality of Diamond. The conservation area is characterized by rolling tallgrass prairie and prairie savanna. The conservation area is located relatively near, although not adjacent to, the George Washington Carver National Monument. Diamond is a city in north central Newton County, Missouri, United States, located southeast of Joplin. The population was 902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Joplin, Missouri, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Diamond is primarily renowned as the birthplace of George Washington Carver. History The origins of the town started with the building of a log house owned by Dr. and Mrs. Leathers. Initially known as Center, a blacksmith's shop opened for business in 1878. Tallgrass Prairie
The tallgrass prairie is an ecosystem native to central North America. Historically, natural and anthropogenic fire, as well as grazing by large mammals (primarily bison) provided periodic disturbances to these ecosystems, limiting the encroachment of trees, recycling soil nutrients, and facilitating seed dispersal and germination. Prior to widespread use of the steel plow, which enabled large scale conversion to agricultural land use, tallgrass prairies extended throughout the American Midwest and smaller portions of southern central Canada, from the transitional ecotones out of eastern North American forests, west to a climatic threshold based on precipitation and soils, to the southern reaches of the Flint Hills in Oklahoma, to a transition into forest in Manitoba. A savanna or savannah is a mixed woodland-grassland (i.e. grassy woodland) ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. Missouri Department Of Conservation
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Conservation Commission were created by Article IV Sections 40-42 of the Missouri Constitution, which were adopted by the voters of the state in 1936 as Amendment 4 to the constitution. The Commission is vested with control, management, restoration, conservation, and regulation of fish, forest, and wildlife resources of the state. The Department of Conservation owns and oversees hatcheries, sanctuaries, refuges, and reservations, and enforces the state wildlife code. The Commission consists of four individuals appointed by the Governor of Missouri to serve unpaid 6-year terms. No more than two of the individuals may be from the same political party. George Washington Carver National Monument
George Washington Carver National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service in Newton County, Missouri. The national monument was founded on July 14, 1943, by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who dedicated $30,000 to the monument. It was the first national monument dedicated to an African American and first to a non-president. (includes 2 photographs from 1975) The site preserves of the boyhood home of George Washington Carver, as well as the 1881 Moses Carver house and the Carver cemetery. His boyhood home consists of rolling hills, woodlands, and prairies. The park has a -mile (1.2 km) nature trail, film, museum, and an interactive exhibit area for students. Missouri Prairie Foundation
The Missouri Prairie Foundation (MPF) is a private-sector nonprofit foundation dedicated to the stewardship of original and replanted tallgrass prairie lands in the U.S. state of Missouri. Missouri, together with its neighbor state Iowa, are at the heart of the tallgrass prairie biome. In large stretches of interior North America, local climate patterns favor well-watered grassland or grassy savanna, and MPF celebrates this pattern of local natural areas. As of 2023, the MPF owns more than of prairie in 32 tracts in various locations throughout Missouri. The MPF manages its lands with the primary goal of maintaining and increasing biome diversity, particularly botanical diversity. The Foundation has counted 30 species of conservation concern that live on its tracts of land.
