''Diamond Dick'' is a fictional character created by William B. Schwartz (writer), William B. Schwartz. He first appeared in "Dashing Diamond Dick; or, The Sarpint of Siskiyou County", a serialized novel that began in Street and Smith's story paper ''New York Weekly'' (Vol. 33, No. 21) on April 8, 1878, by Schwartz, writing under the pseudonym "Delta Calaveras." According to J. Randolph Cox, "the character was undoubtedly inspired by the life and career of herbal-medicine promoter and showman George B. McClellan (ca. 1858–1911), who went by the nickname "Diamond Dick" and was the hero of "Diamond Dick, the Dandy from Denver" by "Buckskin Sam" Hall in Beadle & Adams' New York Dime Library (Vol. 16, No. 199), published on August 16, 1882. Street & Smith or Street & Smith Publications, Inc. was a New York City publisher specializing in inexpensive paperbacks and magazines referred to as dime novels and pulp fiction. They also published comic books and sporting yearbooks. Among their many titles was the science fiction pulp magazine ''Astounding Stories'', acquired from Clayton Magazines in 1933, and retained until 1961. Street & Smith was founded in 1855, and was bought out in 1959. The Street & Smith headquarters was at 79 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan; it was designed by Henry F. Kilburn. The ''New York Weekly'' was a story newspaper published from 1858–1910 in New York City. Under related names it was published from 1846–1915. St George Henry Rathbone
St George Henry Rathborne (26 December 1854 - 16 December 1938), who also wrote as Harrison Adams and many other names, was an American author of boys' stories and dime novels. He is believed to have produced over 330 volumes of fiction in the course of a 60-year career. He had a proclivity for and skill in producing outdoor adventure stories, and his best works fall within that category. Life Rathborne was born in Covington, Kentucky to Gorges Lowther Rathborne and Margaret H. Robertson Rathborne. He attended Woodward High School, Cincinnati, the oldest public high school in the United States. He married Jessie Fremont Conn in 1879, and with her had four children. Rathborne lived in northern New Jersey for most of his adult life.
