Igor Diakonoff
Igor Mikhailovich Diakonoff (occasionally spelled Diakonov, russian: link=no, И́горь Миха́йлович Дья́конов; 12 January 1915 – 2 May 1999) was a Russian historian, linguist, and translator and a renowned expert on the Ancient Near East and its languages. His brothers were also distinguished historians. Life and career Diakonoff was brought up in Norway. He graduated from Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University) in 1938. In the same year he joined the staff of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). In 1949, he published a comprehensive study of Assyria, followed in 1956 by a monograph on Media. Later on, he teamed up with the linguist Sergei Starostin to produce authoritative studies of the Caucasian, Afroasiatic, and Hurro-Urartian languages. Alexey Diakonoff
Alexey Nikolaievich Diakonoff (1 March 1907 – 20 September 1989), also transliterated as Alexej Nikolajewitsch Diakonoff, was a Russian–Dutch entomologist who specialised in Microlepidoptera. His parents immigrated to the Netherlands East Indies where, from 1923, he had his elementary education. Diakonoff then studied biology at the University of Amsterdam. A thesis on Indo-Malayan Tortricidae completed, he returned to Java in 1939 to take up a post as an entomologist at a sugar plantations and industries research station.in 1941 he was offered a position in the Bogor Zoology Museum at Bogor Botanical Gardens but the Japanese invasion intervened. In 1945 he returned to the Netherlands and studied at Leiden Museum working in the Lepidoptera collection. He returned to Bogor as the Dutch tried to regain Java. Anatoly Aleksandrovich Dyakonov (; 24 June 1907 – 8 August 1972) was a Soviet Army lieutenant general and a Hero of the Soviet Union. Early life and prewar service Dyakonov was born on 24 June 1907 in the khutor of Zimniki, Glazunovskaya stanitsa, Don Host Oblast. He worked as a physical education instructor in Novonikolayevsky District, then from June 1926 went on Komsomol work as a pioneer leader and physical education instructor in Leninsky District of Rostov-on-Don. Dyakonov Surface Waves
Dyakonov surface waves (DSWs) are surface electromagnetic waves that travel along the interface in between an isotropic and an uniaxial-birefringent medium. They were theoretically predicted in 1988 by the Russian physicist Mikhail Dyakonov. Unlike other types of acoustic and electromagnetic surface waves, the DSW's existence is due to the difference in symmetry of materials forming the interface. He considered the interface between an isotropic transmitting medium and an anisotropic uniaxial crystal, and showed that under certain conditions waves localized at the interface should exist. Later, similar waves were predicted to exist at the interface between two identical uniaxial crystals with different orientations.
