Dhow Countries Music Academy
The Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) is the first and only music school in Zanzibar, Tanzania, located in Vuga (Culture Music Club Building) in Stone Town. The academy promotes and preserves music heritage of the "Dhow Region" which include countries along the shores of the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. Particular emphasis is being placed on teaching traditional music styles, such as Taarab, Kidumbaki or Ngoma. "In recent years the Music Academy of the Tanzanian island has become an important meeting center of the dynamic local cultural scene." Aims The academy was established in 2002 and throughout the years it had more than 3000 students. DCMA is one of the most prominent ambassadors of taarab music in the world. Zanzibar Taarab Kidumbak Ensemble
Zanzibar (; ; ) is an insular Autonomous administrative division, semi-autonomous province which united with Tanganyika (1961–1964), Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. It is an Zanzibar Archipelago, archipelago in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island. Piotr Damasiewicz, also known as Damaś (born April 11, 1980, in Wroclaw), is a Polish composer and musician. In addition to the trumpet, he plays double bass, and piano. He is also a singer of classical music, including Gregorian chant, and choral music. Additionally, he has done chamber conducting, music arrangement and composition. Harald Lassen (born 13 March 1987 in Kristiansand, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician, composer and band leader. Besides leading his own band LASSEN, he has also been a part of bands such as Pixel, Mopti (feat. Bendik Baksaas on the album ''Bits & Pieces''), No. 4, Dr. Kay And His Interstellar Tone Scientists and DUPLEX. Ricardo Garcia is a Spanish guitarist, leader of the group ''Flamenco Flow'', who is known for his interpretations of Flamenco blended with other musical forms. Birth and education Garcia was born in France in 1966 of an Andalusian family. Both his father's family and his mother's family moved to France during the Franco era. His family was musical, and he was taught to play guitar by his uncle Antonio when he was very young. He learned to accompany his mother singing Maria del Carmen. Garcia appeared in his first concert at the age of nine, and since then he performed alone or with his aunt and uncle in all parts of France. Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi (22 September 1952 – 23 January 2019) was a Zimbabwean musician, businessman, philanthropist, human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Southern Africa Region. Career Mtukudzi grew up in Highfield, a poor neighborhood in Salisbury (modern-day Harare) in Southern Rhodesia. He began performing in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels, a band that also featured Thomas Mapfumo and fellow guitarist James Chimombe. They were given the rare opportunity by Paul Tangi Mhova Mkondo, an African nationalist and music promotor, who provided money and resources to the group. He allowed them to perform at Club Mutanga (Pungwe) which, at the time, was the only night club available for blacks under Rhodesia's policy of segregation. Cleveland Watkiss, (born 21 October 1959), is a British vocalist, actor, and composer. Biography Cleveland Watkiss was born in Hackney, East London, to Jamaican parents, and was one of nine children. He is the older brother of pianist Trevor Watkis (and the different spelling of their surname is deliberate). At age 16, he won twice in a local singing talent competition, hosted by "FatMan" of FatMan Sound System (North East London Based Roots, Reggae & Dub Sound System).
