Dhaka-9
Dhaka-9 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Saber Hossain Chowdhury of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Dhaka South City Corporation wards 1 through 7, and three union parishads of Khilgaon and Sabujbagh thanas: Dakshingaon, Manda, and Nasirabad. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2008 general election, the Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. The 2008 redistricting added 7 new seats to the Dhaka metropolitan area, increasing the number of constituencies in the capital from 8 to 15, and altered the boundaries of the constituency. Saber Hossain Chowdhury
Saber Hossain Chowdhury (born 10 September 1961) is a politician from Bangladesh and the incumbent member of Parliament in Bangladesh from the Dhaka-9 constituency. He was the president of Inter-Parliamentary Union from 2014 to 2017. He is the former president of Bangladesh Cricket Board. He received the ''Order of Friendship'', Russia's highest state decoration. Education and early career Chowdhury's father is late Hedayat Hossain Chowdhury, the founder of Karnaphuli Group, a top conglomerate in Bangladesh. He was a graduate of School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and holds a double honors degree in economics and politics. Mockbul Hossain ( – 24 May 2020) was a Bangladeshi businessman and Bangladesh Awami League politician who served as a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Dhaka-9 constituency. Abul Hasnat ( – 16 September 2022) was a Bangladeshi politician and lawyer. He was the founding member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee. Political life Abul Hasnat served as the first mayor (elected by the commissioners) of Dhaka City Corporation during 1977–1982 and, again, in 1990. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. 1988 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 3 March 1988. They were boycotted by several major parties, including the Bangladesh Awami League, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League, the National Awami Party (Muzaffar) and the Workers Party of Bangladesh. 2014 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 5 January 2014, in accordance with the constitutional requirement that elections must take place within the 90-day period before the expiration of the term of the Jatiya Sangshad on 24 January 2014. The elections were not free and fair. They were preceded by a government crackdown on the opposition, with Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Opposition leader Khaleda Zia was put under house arrest.
