Dewey Barto (June 10, 1896 – January 31, 1973) was best known as the shorter half of the comedic and acrobatic dance act, Barto and Mann. He was the father of actress Nancy Walker, known earlier in life as "Nan Barto". Early career Dewey Barto was baptized on March 28, 1897, with the name Steward Stephen Swoyer, according to ''Pennsylvania's Church and Town Records, 1708-1985'', in Reading, Pennsylvania, one of the eight children born to Elizabeth and Charles "Roxie" Swoyer, an acrobat, who owned a horse and wagon circus. Barto later adjusted his name to Stewart Steven Swoyer, as per his WWII draft records. Dewey came from a family of performers. His sisters Estelle and Ida were trapeze artists and contortionists, first as the Miaco Sisters and later as the Delno Sisters. His brother Charles played drums with several well-known bands. The White Rats
The White Rats was a fraternal organization formed by vaudeville performers, led by George Fuller Golden, as a labor union to support the rights of male performers. Women and African-American performers were not allowed to join. The White Rats attempted to combat the monopolistic practices of the United Booking Office (UBO) and the Vaudeville Managers Association (VMA), groups formed by vaudeville theater managers to keep performers' wages low and control when and where performers were allowed to work. George Kline Mann (December 2, 1905 – November 22, 1977) was best known as the taller half of the comedic and acrobatic dance act, Barto and Mann. Early life Mann was born in Hollywood, California. His father, Mack Andrew Mann, moved to California from Cassopolis, Michigan in the late 1800s and worked as a construction superintendent of railroad bridges. His mother, Jean Kline Mann, was also from Cassopolis. Mack and Jean met and married in Los Angeles, California. George Mann grew up in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, moving to Santa Monica as a teenager with his parents.
