Edward Hartley Dewart
Edward Hartley Dewart (1828 – 17 June 1903) was an Irish-born Canadian Methodist clergyman, author and editor. He became a leading figure in the Methodist church and the temperance movement. For several years he edited the official Methodist journal '' The Christian Guardian''. His poetry anthology ''Selections from Canadian Poets'' (1864) was the first anthology of Canadian poetry to be published. Early years Edward Hartley Dewart was born in Stradone, County Cavan, Ireland in 1828, son of James Dewart and Margaret Hartley. His family was of mixed Scottish and English origins, and were Anglicans. He migrated to Upper Canada with his parents in 1834. They settled in Dummer Township, now part of Peterborough County, where they adopted the Methodist faith. In 1847 Dewart went to Toronto to study at the Normal School (teachers' training college). Hartley Dewart
Herbert Hartley Dewart QC (9 November 1861 – 7 July 1924) was an Ontario lawyer and politician. Early life and education Dewart was born in St. Johns, Canada East, on 9 November 1861. His father was Edward Hartley Dewart, an Irish Methodist minister who was a preacher in St. Johns. His mother was Dorothy Matilda Hunt. In 1865 Dewart and his family moved to Toronto. He attended Toronto's model school and collegiate institute. He studied at the University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1883, and Osgoode Hall, being called to the Ontario bar in 1887. He co-founded the Young Men's Liberal Club and was its president from 1887 to 1888. Early career Dewart set up practice in Toronto and served as crown attorney for York County from 1891 to 1904. In 1895, he replaced Britton Bath Osler as the prosecutor for the murder trial of Clara Ford after Osler's wife died. Leslie Dewart
Leslie Dewart (December 18, 1922 – December 20, 2009) was a Canadian philosopher and Professor Emeritus at the Graduate Department of Philosophy and the Centre for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. Dewart was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1922, but he was raised by his mother in Cuba. Coming to Canada at the age of 19, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in bomber-reconnaissance operations on the Atlantic Coast from 1942 to 1947, subsequently becoming a Canadian citizen. He then began his studies at the University of Toronto. He was a Roman Catholic. Academic career Dewart's academic interests were wide-ranging, and evolved considerably over the course of his career. Lewis Dewart
Lewis Dewart (November 14, 1780 – April 26, 1852) was a Jacksonian member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Lewis Dewart (father of William Lewis Dewart) was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He was a clerk in his father's store for several years and later became a coal operator and banker. He served as postmaster at Sunbury from 1806 to 1816. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1812 to 1820. He was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1823 and served three years. He was one of the organizers and builders of the Danville & Pottsville Railroad, and served as one of the first directors. Dewart was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress. Murray Dewart (born September 19, 1947) is an American sculptor best known for his large gate-like structures in granite and bronze. Dewart's sculptures are often created for site-specific locations and installed in parks and gardens. His work is in more than thirty museums and public collections around the world. He is the editor of the Random House anthology ''Poems About Sculpture''. Early life and education Dewart was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, in 1947. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were Protestant clergymen. Raised in Boston, Dewart attended the Dexter School, Milton Academy and Harvard College, where he studied sculpture with William Reimann. After graduating with honors in 1970, Dewart lived in rural Vermont and New Hampshire for seven years before returning to Boston.
