Dewar Cup Circuit
The Dewar Cup circuit was a series tour of British Indoor courts, indoor tennis tournaments sponsored by the Scotland, Scottish whisky firm of Dewar's from 1965 to 1976. History The Dewar Cup circuit were held continuously throughout the autumn, normally October through to November each of the individual events were stand alone tournaments, but formed part of a particular leg of the tour for that season e.g. first leg, second leg, third leg and fourth leg. The tournaments featured both men's and women's singles and doubles and mixed doubles competition awarding prize money, players were also awarded qualifying points for the climax of the tour, and were staged as the Dewar Cup Finals, initially held at the Crystal Palace, London for the first two years, they then moved,moved to the Royal Albert Hall in 1970 through till 1976, by which time the circuit had declined to the Dewar Cup London, one main event for 1975 and 1976. The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. Dewar Cup Torquay
The Slazenger Torquay Open was an indoor tennis tournament originally founded as the Palace Hotel Covered Courts in 1936 that was sponsored by the Dunlop Company for that year only. From the 1950s it was known as the Palace Hotel Covered Courts Championships, that ran until 1967. In 1968 the Scottish whisky company Dewars became sponsors of the event, and it was rebranded as the Dewar Cup Torquay until 1972 when sponsorship ended causing the 1973 edition not being held. In 1974 the sports company Slazenger took over sponsorship of the event until 1978 when it was abolished. It was at played at the Palace Hotel, Torquay, Devon, England. Dewar Cup Stalybridge
The Dewar Cup Stalybridge and originally called the Stalybridge Covered Courts (1965–1967) was an indoor tennis event held from 1965 through 1970 and played in Stalybridge, England as part of the Dewar Cup circuit of indoor tournaments held throughout the United Kingdom. History In December 1965 the first edition of the Stalybridge Covered Courts was inaugurated. This tournament ran under this event name until the Scottish whisky firm Dewar's sponsored the Dewar Cup circuit, Dewer Cup Circuit of events beginning in 1968. This tournament was then rebranded as the Dewar Cup Stalybridge until 1971, when Dewar's did not renew their sponsorship and the tournament ended.
