Devotchkas
The Devotchkas are a four-piece American street punk band from New York City. Their name was derived from the popular film and novel ''A Clockwork Orange (novel), A Clockwork Orange''. ''Devotchka'' in Nadsat means "girl", which is itself derived from the Russian word (девочка) of the same meaning. Wanting a permanent drummer, they eventually recruited Gabrielle in 1999 to complete the line-up. The Krays are an American street punk band from Brooklyn, New York, who formed in 1994. John writes all the lyrics. The Krays played one of the last shows at CBGB in New York City. John was a member of The Devotchkas, NY Rel-X, and Roger Miret and the Disasters, and also played bass for The Casualties for a couple years. Punk Core Records
Punk Core Records is an inactive record label founded in 1989 by Dave Punk Core. The label is based on Long Island, New York. Punk Core originally started out a punk zine/distro in the late 1980s, but became a record label in the mid 1990s. Punk Core is often credited for helping to revive street punk, a genre that had flourished in early 1980s Britain but had disappeared by the end of the decade. Punk Core brought global exposure to many underground bands especially out of the New York area. In 2006, Punk Core Records released the compilation DVD, ''Pure Punk Rock''. The DVD was directed by punk filmmaker Lewis Smithingham, and featured live performances from all of the bands on the label. A Clockwork Orange (novel)
''A Clockwork Orange'' is a dystopian satirical black comedy novel by English writer Anthony Burgess, published in 1962. It is set in a near-future society that has a youth subculture of extreme violence. The teenage protagonist, Alex, narrates his violent exploits and his experiences with state authorities intent on reforming him. The book is partially written in a Russian-influenced argot called "Nadsat", which takes its name from the Russian suffix that is equivalent to '-teen' in English. According to Burgess, it was a ''jeu d'esprit'' written in just three weeks. In 2005, ''A Clockwork Orange'' was included on ''Time'' magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923, and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Nadsat
Nadsat is a fictional register or argot used by the teenage gang members in Anthony Burgess's dystopian novel ''A Clockwork Orange''. Burgess was a linguist and he used this background to depict his characters as speaking a form of Russian-influenced English. The name comes from the Russian suffix equivalent of "-teen" as in "thirteen" (-надцать, ''-nad·tsat''). Nadsat was also used in Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of the book. Description Nadsat is a mode of speech used by the ''nadsat'', members of the teen subculture in the novel ''A Clockwork Orange''. The narrator and protagonist of the book, Alex, uses it in first-person style to relate the story to the reader. Gramophone Record
A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. At first, the discs were commonly made from shellac, with earlier records having a fine abrasive filler mixed in. Starting in the 1940s polyvinyl chloride became common, hence the name vinyl. The phonograph record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. It had co-existed with the phonograph cylinder from the late 1880s and had effectively superseded it by around 1912. Records retained the largest market share even when new formats such as the compact cassette were mass-marketed. CBGB
CBGB was a New York City music club opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in Manhattan's East Village. The club was previously a biker bar and before that was a dive bar. The letters ''CBGB'' were for '' Country'', '' BlueGrass'', and '' Blues'', Kristal's original vision, yet CBGB soon became a famed venue of punk rock and new wave bands like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads. From the early 1980s onward, CBGB was known for hardcore punk. One storefront beside CBGB became the "CBGB Record Canteen", a record shop and café. In the late 1980s, "CBGB Record Canteen" was converted into an art gallery and second performance space, "CB's 313 Gallery".
