Devonport Football Club
Devonport Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Devonport, Tasmania. The club currently competes in the North West Football League (NWFL). The club previously competed in the Northern Tasmanian Football League, but from 2009 it joined the newly reformed Tasmanian State League, where it played until withdrawing before the 2018 season. History Northern Tasmanian Football League The collapse of statewide football in late 2000 saw Devonport revert to a regional competition, in this case the Northern Tasmanian Football League (NTFL), but with only 9 wins from 20 matches for the year the club finished 8th (out of 12), a result it failed to improve on in 2002. In 2003, however, the ''Magpies'' surged up the ladder to qualify for the finals, while the next year they went within one game – albeit a game in which they were conclusively vanquished by Burnie – of a flag. Bob Withers
Robert Withers is a former Australian rules footballer who played in Tasmania and for Port Melbourne, noted for his selection in the 1961 All-Australian team. Withers was a regular member of the Port Melbourne side during the 1950s and represented the VFA in 1957, 1958, and 1959. He moved to Tasmania in 1960 and joined NTFA club North Launceston as captain-coach, steering the club to premierships in 1961 and 1963. In his first year at North Launceston he played in the Tasmanian interstate team that scored its first-ever win against a VFL team on 13 June 1960. Geoffrey Martin (footballer)
Geoffrey Bernard "Paddy" Martin (16 July 1927 – 12 June 2020) was an Australian rules footballer who played in Tasmania with Launceston, Sandy Bay, Ulverstone and Burnie. He was a half back flanker in Launceston's official 'Team of the Century' and in 2005 was inducted into Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame as a coaching legend. Martin also represented Tasmania once in first-class cricket. Martin was born in Launceston, Tasmania. He made an immediate impression on his debut for Launceston in 1946, and was selected that year to play with the Northern Tasmanian Football Association's representative team. The following season he crossed to Sandy Bay but returned to Launceston in 1948 where he stayed until 1954, despite getting an offer to go to Victorian Football League club Melbourne. Peter Lyon
Peter Lyon (born 28 December 1941) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s. Career Lyon played with Eaglehawk originally, then went across to Deniliquin in 1961 and played in a losing grand final against Cobram. Lyon shared the 1961 Murray Football League O'Dwyer Medal with Cobram coach, Les Mogg. Lyon then returned to Eaglehawk in 1962, before heading to Hawthorn in 1963. Lyon came off the bench in the 1963 VFL Grand Final, which Hawthorn lost to Geelong. He could only break into the seniors three times the following year. A centreman, Lyon spent the next three seasons as playing coach of Devonport. He represented both the North West Football Union and Tasmanian representative teams, winning the Alstergen Trophy in 1967 for his performance with the former. Jervis Stokes
Jervis Arthur Stokes (21 September 1927 – 30 April 2016) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early career Stokes, a centreman and half forward, played originally for Burnie. He represented Tasmania at the 1947 Hobart Carnival. Richmond In 1948, Stokes joined the Richmond Football Club, where his brother Ray played. It was his injured brother's spot that Jervis took to make his league debut in round seven, against Hawthorn. He made a total of 11 appearances that year, then eight in the 1949 VFL season, followed by 14 in 1950. Post VFL career Stokes went to Moorabbin as captain-coach in 1951, for the club's inaugural season in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Neil Conlan (7 August 1936 – 22 July 1978) was an Australian football player from Tasmania. Conlan played as a forward. William Edward "Bull" Berryman (14 November 1899 – 11 January 1953) was an Australian rules footballer who played for South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1920s. Peter Eric James Prentice (July 20, 1956 – October 13, 2016) was a Canadian politician who served as the 16th premier of Alberta from 2014 to 2015. Cec Rheinberger (born 24 February 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Rheinberger made just one appearance in the 1966 VFL season when he debuted along with Alex Ruscuklic mid year, against Melbourne. Wayne Weidemann
Wayne Weidemann (born 21 October 1966) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). The “Weed” as he was fondly known as, was a highly underrated player, often showing strength, agility, versatility and ability in directing play up forward or back. Rumours of internal disgruntled selection table members for three years constantly created disharmony for the AAT panel and the AFL courtesy of Weidemann’s omission from the team.
