Devereaux Jennings
H. Devereaux ("Dev") Jennings (June 28, 1924 – April 14, 2000) was an American alpine skier. Jennings competed in multiple events during his career, including the men's downhill at the 1948 Winter Olympics The 1948 Winter Olympics, officially known as the V Olympic Winter Games (german: V. Olympische Winterspiele; french: Ves Jeux olympiques d'hiver; it, V Giochi olimpici invernali; rm, V Gieus olimpics d'enviern) and commonly known as St. Moritz .... He was involved in the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, was Executive Director of Ski Utah, leading Utah's Olympic bid in the 1960s, and in the 1980s and 1990s became Executive Director of Ski New England. In 1989 he was inducted into the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. The men's alpine skiing downhill event was part of the alpine skiing at the 1948 Winter Olympics programme. It was the first appearance of the event and the competition was held on Monday, 2 February 1948. One hundred and eleven alpine skiers from 25 nations competed.
