Development Assistance Accountability Act
The ''Official Development Assistance Accountability Act'' (french: Loi sur la responsabilité en matière d’aide au développement officielle) is Government of Canada, Canadian federal legislation that governs how development aid given to foreign countries is delivered and administered. The bill was introduced as C-293, a Private Member's Bill by Liberal MP John McKay (politician), John McKay which called for significant changes to the manner in which Canada’s official development assistance is delivered and administered. Often referred to as the "Better Aid Bill," its primary purpose is to mandate that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) target Canada’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) to the specific goal of poverty reduction in developing nations. John McKay (politician)
John Norman McKay (born March 21, 1948) is a Canadian lawyer and politician. He is the Liberal Member of Parliament for the riding of Scarborough—Guildwood. McKay was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance from 2003 to 2006 during the government of Paul Martin, then served as an opposition MP and critic until November 2015 during the government of Stephen Harper. A private member's bill is a bill (proposed law) introduced into a legislature by a legislator who is not acting on behalf of the executive branch. Canadian International Development Agency
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) was a federal Canadian organization that administered foreign aid programs in developing countries. The agency was merged into the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2013 by the federal government under Prime Minister Stephen Harper. History CIDA was formed in 1968 by the Canadian government under Lester B. Pearson. CIDA reported to the Parliament of Canada through the Minister for International Cooperation. Its mandate was to "support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world."
