Ryan (also known as Ryan Camp) is an unincorporated community in Inyo County, California that is now privately owned and stewarded by thDeath Valley Conservancy A former mining community, company town, and seasonal hotel, it is now under careful restoration and preservation. Ryan is situated at an elevation of in the Amargosa Range, and is northeast of Dante's View and southeast of Furnace Creek. The Ryan Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2025. Name The mining community of Lila C was constructed in 1907 near the Lila C mine, which produced colemanite for the Pacific Coast Borax Company. The town was named by its owner William Tell Coleman, after his daughter, Lila C. Coleman. William Tell Coleman
William Tell Coleman (1824–1893) was an American pioneer and politician who served as the Chairman of the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance. He later served two separate terms in the California State Assembly in 1859 and 1861. He was the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 1865, but lost to Republican Cornelius Cole. Early life William Tell Coleman was born in Cynthiana in Harrison County, Kentucky on February 29, 1824. He was educated at St. Louis University in Missouri. Tonopah And Tidewater Railroad
The Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad was a former class II railroad that served eastern California and southwestern Nevada. The railroad was built mainly to haul borax from Francis Marion Smith's Pacific Coast Borax Company mines located just east of Death Valley, but it also hauled lead, clay, feldspar, passengers and general goods across the desert to a connection with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad at Ludlow, California, and to the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (later Union Pacific Railroad) at Crucero, California.
