Deutsches St. Leger
The Deutsches St. Leger is a Group 3 flat horse race in Germany open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Dortmund over a distance of 2,800 metres (about 1¾ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September or October. It is Germany's equivalent of the St. Leger Stakes, a famous race in England. History The event was established in 1881, and it was originally restricted to three-year-olds. It was staged at Hanover until 1908, and for a period it was called the Norddeutsches Saint Leger. It was transferred to Grunewald in 1909, and to Hoppegarten in 1934. The race became known as the Lehndorff-Rennen in 1940. It was cancelled in 1945 and 1946, and held at Dortmund in 1947. It took place at Düsseldorf in 1948 and 1949, and on the latter occasion it was renamed the Deutsches St. Leger. It began its current spell at Dortmund in 1950. Mark Johnston (racehorse Trainer)
Mark Johnston (born 10 October 1959) is a Scottish racehorse trainer based in Middleham, North Yorkshire, England. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the University of Glasgow and is a qualified vet. He started training at a stable near Louth, Lincolnshire in 1987, and his first winner was Hinari Video at Carlisle He has been training in Middleham since 1988 when he purchased Kingsley House (often falsely attributed to be the former home of Charles Kingsley, author of '' The Water Babies''). In 2004 he won the 1,000 Guineas with Attraction. Silvestre de Sousa (born 31 December 1980 in São Francisco do Maranhão, Brazil) is a Brazilian flat racing jockey based in Britain. He was champion jockey of Britain in 2015, with 132 winners, and again in 2017 and 2018. Childhood and early career He was born in São Francisco do Maranhão, Maranhão. He moved to São Paulo when he was 17 years old. The youngest of ten siblings, de Sousa was 18 before he sat on a racehorse for the first time. Andrasch Starke (born 4 January 1974, in Germany) is a jockey in international Thoroughbred horse racing. Starke began racing at age fifteen as an amateur and since turning professional has won the German riding championship six times. John Dunlop (racehorse Trainer)
John Leeper Dunlop (10 July 1939 – 7 July 2018) was an English race horse trainer based in Arundel, Sussex. He trained the winners of 74 Group One races, including 10 British Classics, with over 3000 winners in total. He was the British flat racing Champion Trainer in 1995. Born in Tetbury, he first took out a training licence in 1966. After a two-year apprenticeship with Neville Dent and Gordon Smyth he took over Castle Stables in Arundel, on the Duke of Norfolk's estate. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of Middle Eastern influences in British horseracing, training Hatta, Sheikh Mohammed's first winner as an owner at Brighton in 1977. André Fabre
André Fabre (born 9 December 1945) is a French thoroughbred horse racing trainer. The son of a diplomat, Fabre graduated from university with a law degree but then decided to pursue a career in thoroughbred horse racing. He began by working in the stables as a groom then as a schooling rider. He became France's leading jump jockey, winning more than two hundred and fifty races including the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. When he turned to training horses, Fabre proved even more successful, first with jump horses then with flat racers. Billy Newnes
William Anthony Paul Newnes (born Liverpool, 6 December 1959) is an Epsom Oaks winning jockey, best known for his connection with the horse Time Charter, on which he won the Oaks, Sun Chariot Stakes and Champion Stakes in 1982. He was also Champion Apprentice the same season, with 57 winners. Not long afterwards, in 1984, he was banned for three years for accepting £1,000 from professional gambler Harry Bardsley in return for information. After his return, he won the 1989 Greenham Stakes on Zayyani, but spent much of the 1990s riding in Germany, where he won the Deutsches Derby in 1992 on Pik Konig.
