Deutscher Schachbund
The German Chess Federation (german: Deutscher Schachbund, DSB) is the umbrella organization for German chess players. It is a member of the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund and of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. It has over 90,000 members in over 2500 clubs, making it one of the world's largest national chess federations. Its members are 17 regional chess federations, the German Blind and Visually Impaired Chess Federation (DBSB), Die Schwalbe (chess composition society), the German Correspondence Chess Federation (BdF) and the Chess Bundesliga. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (german: Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund or DOSB) was founded on 20 May 2006 by a merger of the ''Deutscher Sportbund'' (DSB), and the ''Nationales Olympisches Komitee für Deutschland'' (NOK) which dates back to 1895, the year it was founded and recognized as NOC by the IOC. ''Die Schwalbe'' (English: The Swallow) is the German chess composition society. It issues the bimonthly magazine ''Die Schwalbe''. Society ''Die Schwalbe'' was founded on 10 February 1924 in Essen as ''Vereinigung von Problemfreunden zur Förderung der Aufgabenkunst'' (Society of problem friends for advancement of chess composition art). There had been 15 foundation fathers from the Ruhr Area lead-managed by Wilhelm Maßmann. Anton Trilling was their first president. In 1972 ''Die Schwalbe'' became a member of ''Deutscher Schachbund'' (German chess union) initiated by Gerhard Wolfgang Jensch. Johannes Hinsken from Bottrop proposed the name of the society. Chess Bundesliga
The term Chess Bundesliga (german: Schach-Bundesliga) normally refers to the premier league of team chess in Germany established in 1980. It is arguably the strongest league of its kind and attracts many high-rated grandmasters. Austria also has a Bundesliga for chess, usually described as the Bundesliga OST (for Österreich). Format Sixteen teams face each other in a single round robin format, each match-day team formed of eight players. The season runs between October and April. Team members may be male or female, but there is also a separate Bundesliga restricted to female players ("Frauen-Schach-Bundesliga"). Each playing weekend normally comprises two matches for each team, played on consecutive days. Matches are arranged to that teams pair up as "travelling partners".
