Detroit Express (1981–1983)
The Detroit Express was an American soccer team based in Detroit, Michigan and a member of the American Soccer League. They joined the league in 1981 after the original NASL Express were moved to Washington D.C. to replace the Diplomats who had folded at the end of 1980. The ASL Express played their home games in the Pontiac Silverdome and then at Tartar Field on the campus of Wayne State University. The 1981 Express finished second in the Freedom Division with a 15 win, 11 loss and 2 tie record. Mike Mancini was the leading scorer for Detroit with 16 goals, followed by Brian Tinnion with 9. The Express advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a 4–1 defeat of the New York Eagles, but were knocked out of the semi-finals 1–1 and 1–2 by New York United. Pontiac Silverdome
The Pontiac Silverdome (also known simply as the Silverdome) was a stadium in Pontiac, Michigan. It opened in 1975 and sat on 199 acres (51 ha) of land. When the stadium opened, it featured a fiberglass fabric roof held up by air pressure, the first use of the architectural technique in a major athletic facility. With a seating capacity of 82,666+, it was the largest stadium in the National Football League (NFL) until FedExField in Landover, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. expanded its capacity to over 85,000 in 2000. It was primarily the home of the Detroit Lions of the NFL from 1975 to 2001 and was also home to the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1978 to 1988. Tad DeLorm
Tad DeLorm (born in Trier) is a retired German-born American football (soccer) goalkeeper who played three seasons in the North American Soccer League and three in the American Soccer League. He now works at Classical Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut. He is a soccer and baseball coach. College DeLorm attended Keene State College where he was a 1977 NAIA first team All American. That year, Keene went to the NAIA national men's soccer championship where they lost to Quincy University. In December 1996, Keene State inducted DeLorm into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Detroit Express
The Detroit Express was a soccer team based in suburban Detroit that played in the now defunct North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1978 to 1980. Its home field was the Pontiac Silverdome. The Express were co-owned by Jimmy Hill, Roger Faulkner, Sonny VanArnem, and Gary Lemmen. Jimmy Hill who was also the managing director and chairman of the English club Coventry City. Steve Westrook is a retired American soccer defender who played professionally in the American Soccer League, United Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. In 1977, Westbrook graduated from Christian Brothers College High School. He attended Indiana University, playing as a forward on the men's soccer team from 1977 to 1980. The Hoosiers finished runner-up in the 1978 and 1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. Brian Tinnion
Brian Tinnion (born 23 February 1968) is an English former football player and manager. He made over 450 appearances for Bristol City, including a spell as player-manager where he is currently in the role of Academy Director. He started as a left-back but later became a goal-scoring left-sided midfielder. Career Tinnion was born in Stanley, County Durham and was recruited by Newcastle United as an apprentice after scouts had spotted his useful left foot, he went on to be a member of the Newcastle United FA Youth Cup winning side of 1985 that included the likes of Paul Gascoigne. Tinnion signed as a professional before a first-team home game on the pitch of St James' Park a few days after his eighteenth birthday in 1986. In the 1987–88 season, he started 30 league games for the Magpies in the left-back slot.
