Aida Desta
Princess Aida Desta (8 April 1927 – 15 January 2013), baptismal name Bisrate Gabriel, was the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Haile Selassie, eldest child and daughter of ''Ras'' Desta Damtew and Princess Tenagnework. She was the wife of '' Leul Ras'' Mangasha Seyum, Prince of Tigray, son of Seyum Mangasha, and great-grandson of Emperor Yohannes IV. Her godmother was Empress Zewditu of Ethiopia. Biography The young Princess accompanied her mother, siblings, and grandparents into exile in 1936 upon the occupation of Ethiopia by fascist Italy. Her father ''Ras'' Desta Damtew however led the resistance forces in southern Ethiopia for some months, until he was captured by the Italians and executed in 1937. Lieutenant Colonel Asrat Desta (Amharic: ኮሎኔል አሥራት ደስታ) of Ethiopia was the Chairman of Information and Public Relation Committee of the Provisional Military Administrative Council, PMAC of Ethiopia. He died on February 3, 1977, together with Head of State Brigadier General Teferi Banti and five other officers in a coup d'état carried out against them by Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam. Princess Hirut Desta (also Princess Ruth Desta) was the daughter of ''Ras'' Desta Damtew and Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie, and granddaughter of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. She was the widow of General Nega Tegegn, who was governor of the provinces of Begemder and Semien. She was described by Nathaniel T. Kenney as a "trim, most democratic of princesses," who "was not above grabbing a tool from a workman, I suspect, and showing him how to use it." Princess Hirut was educated at the School of St Clare (renamed Bolitho School), Penzance, Cornwall, and at Clarendon School for Girls, Abergele, North Wales. Gebre Kristos Desta (ገብረ ክርስቶስ ደስታ) ( 1932–1981) (also Gebrekristos Desta) was an Ethiopian artist and poet. He is credited with bringing modern art to Ethiopia Both his paintings and poems stirred controversy among his countryfolk. He died young, at 50, as a refugee living in the United States, but despite his short life he transformed Ethiopian art influenced many a young artist. Rear Admiral Iskinder Desta (6 August 1934 – 23 November 1974) was a member of the Ethiopian Imperial family and naval officer. A grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie I, he served as the Deputy Commander of the Imperial Ethiopian Navy, its most senior officer, from 1958 until his execution by the Derg in 1974. Tamrat Desta ( am, ታምራት ደስታ; 1978 – 18 April 2018) was an Ethiopian singer and songwriter. He was best known for his two albums ''Anleyaym'' (2004) and ''Kanchi Ayebeltm'' (2008). Life and career Tamrat Desta was born in Bishaan Gurraacha near Shashamane, Ethiopia in 1978. He was the second of three children, all boys. After some years in Tiqur Wuha, his family moved to Shashemene and later went to Awassa, where Tamrat completed high school. In 1998, Tamrat moved to Dire Dawa to live with his guardian; while there, he began to perform as a singer. In 1999, Tamrat relocated to Addis Ababa to pursue his music career. He released his debut album, ''Anleyaym'' in 2004. Most of the lyrics on this CD were written by Habtamu Bogale, and the melodies of six tracks were composed by himself. Princess Seble Desta (also Princess Sybil Desta) (born September 1, 1931) is a member of the Solomonic dynasty, which ruled Ethiopia until 1974. She was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is the daughter of Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie and Ras Desta Damtew, and granddaughter of the late former Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and Empress Menen Asfaw. Princess Sophia Desta was the youngest daughter of ''Ras'' Desta Damtew and Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie, and granddaughter of Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. Desta Asgedom
Desta Asgedom (29 February 1972 – 1 September 1992) was an Ethiopian athlete who specialised in middle distance races. A world junior 800 metres champion and an All-Africa Games silver medalist, he died in the United States not long after these achievements. Biography Asgedom first came to prominence in 1990 with his performances at the World Junior Championships in Bulgaria, where he won a gold medal in the 800 metres and claimed a bronze medal in the 1500 metres race. In the same year he was a bronze medalist in the 800 metres at the African Championships in Cairo. In 1991 he competed in the World Championships, which were held in Tokyo. Soon after he represented Ethiopia at the 1991 All-Africa Games and finished with the silver medal in the 1500 metres. ''Ras'' Desta Damtew (Amharic: ደስታ ዳምጠው ; ''c.'' 1892 – 24 February 1937) was an Ethiopian noble, an army commander, and a son-in-law of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Biography Born in the village of Maskan (in the contemporary Gurage Zone), Desta Damtew was the second son of ''Fitawrari'' Damtew Ketena. His older brother was Abebe Damtew. In 1896, ''Fitawrari'' Damtew Ketena was killed at the Battle of Adwa.
