Alexandre-François Desportes
Alexandre-François Desportes (24 February 1661 — 20 April 1743) was a French painter and decorative designer who specialised in animals. Desportes was born in Champigneulle, Ardennes. He studied in Paris, in the studio of the Flemish painter Nicasius Bernaerts, a pupil of Frans Snyders. During a brief sojourn in Poland, 1695–96, he painted portraits of John III Sobieski and Polish aristocrats; after the king's death Desportes returned to Paris, convinced that he should specialise in animals and flowers. He was received by the Académie de peinture et de sculpture in 1699, with the ''Self-Portrait in Hunting Dress'' now in the Musée du Louvre. In 1712–13 he spent six months in England. He received many commissions for decorative panels for the royal châteaux: Versailles, Marly, Meudon, Compiègne and, his last royal commission, for Louis XV at Choisy, 1742. Émile Desportes (1878, Pont l'Evêque, France1944, Méricourt) was a French composer and conductor. He was the father of composer Yvonne Desportes (1907–93). Desportes was originally a lawyer at Caen, then professor of music and conductor. He studied composition with Paul Dukas, but soon became more interested in other activities. Hélène Desportes (1620 – June 24, 1675) is often cited as the first white child born in Canada (New France). There is considerable disagreement about when she was born and, in particular, if she was born in Quebec or just before she arrived on the continent. Early life Her parents were French habitants Pierre Desportes (1580 – after 1629), who was in charge of the warehouse in Quebec as well as the village baker, and his wife Françoise Langlois (c1595 – after 1629), who settled in Quebec. Her father was a lawyer in the Parlement de Paris and an investor in the Company of 100 Associates which funded Champlain's colony. Her godmother was Madame Helene Boullé, Hélène Boullé, the wife of Samuel de Champlain. In his will, Champlain left her 300 New France livre, livres (about $15,000 in 1997). Narcisse Henri François Desportes (12 December 1776 – June 7, 1856) was a French botanist and bibliographer who was a native of Champrond. He worked as an auditor to Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck at the ''Muséum national d'histoire naturelle'' in Paris, and became curator of the ''Musée d'histoire naturelle'' in Le Mans. He was the author of bibliographies associated with the departments of Sarthe and Mayenne. In 1829 Desportes identified 2562 species and varieties of rose known to exist in France, of which he catalogued in a work titled ''Roses cultivées en France, au nombre de 2562 espèces ou variétés, avec la synonymie française et latine''. Nicolas Desportes (1718–1787) was a French painter, specialising in representations of animals and hunting scenes. Desportes was born in Busancy. He trained under his uncle Alexandre-François Desportes, an animal painter to king Louis XV Louis XV (15 February 1710 – 10 May 1774), known as Louis the Beloved (french: le Bien-Aimé), was King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death in 1774. This experience became a good account. On his return to France he attached himself to the duke of Anjou, and followed him to Cracow on his election as king of Poland. Nine months in Poland satisfied the civilized Desportes, but in 1574 his patron became king of France as Henry III. He showered favours on the poet, who received, in reward for the skill with which he wrote occasional poems at the royal request, the abbey of Tiron and four other valuable benefices. Yvonne Desportes (18 July 1907 – 29 December 1993) was a French composer, writer, and music educator. She was born in Coburg, Germany, to Émile Desportes, a composer, and Bertha Troriep, a painter. She was a student of Paul Dukas and won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1932. She taught at the Paris Conservatoire and wrote many music textbooks. She composed over 500 works. Education She studied piano with Yvonne Lefébure and Alfred Cortot. She took a preparatory solfege class at the Paris Conservatoire in 1918. She studied for three years at the École Normale de Musique and then attended the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris from 1925 to 1932.
