Desmond Wyndham Otho FitzGerald, 28th Knight of Glin (20 January 1901 – 2 April 1949)''England & Wales, National Probate Calendar'' (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995. was an Anglo-Irish hereditary knight and socialite. Born in Croom, County Limerick, FitzGerald was the only son of Desmond FitzJohn Lloyd FitzGerald, 27th Knight of Glin, and Lady Rachel Charlotte Wyndham-Quin, daughter of Windham Wyndham-Quin, 4th Earl of Dunraven and Mount-Earl. He was educated at Winchester College and Lancing College before moving to London in 1924. In 1929 he married Veronica Villiers (1909-1998), a cousin of Winston Churchill and daughter of Ernest Villiers. They had three children together. Desmond FitzGerald (13 February 1888 – 9 April 1947) was an Irish revolutionary, poet, publicist and Fine Gael politician who served as Minister for Defence from 1927 to 1932, Minister for External Affairs from 1922 to 1927, Minister for Publicity from 1921 to 1922 and Director of Publicity from 1919 to 1921. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1918 to 1937. He was a Senator for the Administrative Panel from 1938 to 1943. Early life Desmond FitzGerald was born Thomas Joseph FitzGerald in Forest Gate in West Ham, Essex in 1888. His parents were Patrick Fitzgerald (1831–1908), a labourer from south Tipperary, and Mary Anne Scollard (1847–1927) from Castleisland, County Kerry. Desmond Fitzgerald (June 16, 1910 – July 23, 1967) was an American intelligence officer for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where he rose to the position of Deputy Director of Plans. He served in the CIA from 1950 until his death. Posthumously he was awarded the National Security Medal. An attorney, he had worked in New York City both before and after World War II. During the war, he was an Army officer, serving as liaison and adviser to the Chinese Army. Early life Desmond Fitzgerald was born in New York City in 1910, to a family in the upper class. Desmond FitzGerald (5 November 1911 – 14 January 1987) was an Irish architect. His most notable work is the original Dublin Airport terminal building. Early life and family Desmond FitzGerald was born in Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, Brittany, France on 5 November 1911. His parents were Mabel (née McConnell) and politician and writer, Desmond FitzGerald. He was the eldest of four brothers, Pierce (1914–1986), Fergus (1920–1983) and Garret (1926–2011). The family moved often once they returned to Ireland, resulting in FitzGerald attending numerous primary schools such as Scoil Bhríghde and Fr John Sweetman's school in Wexford. He later attended Clongowes Wood College and Belvedere College, and Collège Cantonal Saint-Michel at Fribourg and the Collegio Don Bosco, Maroggia in Switzerland. Desmond Fitzgerald (born 30 October 1953) is an Irish medical doctor and academic leader. On 6 October 2016, Fitzgerald was announced as the President-elect of the University of Limerick. He took up this role in early 2017, becoming the fifth President. He resigned in May 2020 for "personal health concerns" citing the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this, Fitzgerald held the positions of Vice President for Health Affairs with University College Dublin and Chief Academic Officer at Ireland East Hospital Group from 2015 to 2016.
