Deshi People
Deshi or Desi people are an indigenous Muslim community from Assam. Deshis are Muslim converts from Koch and Mech communities. In 2022, the government of Assam gave them recognition as an indigenous community. Ali Mech is said to be the first person of the community. The group is descended from a set of tribals which were collectively referred to as Koches, who converted to Islam as they were unable to find a favourable position in Hindu society and came to known as the 'Rajbongshi Muslims'.They are homogeneous with the Koch Rajbongshi people and are bi-linguistic speaking both Assamese language and Kamatapuri language. Koch People
The Koch are a small trans-border ethnic group of Assam and Meghalaya in India and northern Bangladesh. The group consists of nine matrilineal and strictly exogamous clans, with some of them preserving a hitherto sparsely documented Boro-Garo language called Koch, whereas others have switched to local varieties of Indo-Aryan languages. It is a Scheduled Tribe in Meghalaya, India. Koches want to preserve language and culture and heritage. The Koch people in this group are those who have preserved their languages, their animistic religions and follow non-Hindu customs and traditions. Ali Mech
Ali Mech was a tribal chief in the 13th century CE, in the region of present-day Assam belonging to the Mech people. He is said to have helped Bakhtiyar Khalji duing his Tibet campaign and converted to Islam under his influence. Biography Ali Mech is considered the first Muslim convert in Assam. In the wake of Ali Mech's conversion to Islam, some Mech and Koch tribes also adopted the faith. The modern descendants of these converts are the Deshi people. As a tribal chief in the foothills of Kamrup, he aided Bakhtiyar Khilji in his failed invasion of Tibet in 1206 by acting as a guide. E. A. Gait mentions that he guided Bakhtyar Khalji march northwards along the right bank of the Karatoya river (present-day Bangladesh) for ten days, through a country inhabited by the Koch, Mech and Tharu (Terai) tribes.
