Desert Lighthouse
Desert Lighthouse is a full-size functioning lighthouse in the Mojave Desert near Hinkley, California, Hinkley, California, United States. It was built in 2017 by artist Daniel Hawkins (artist), Daniel Hawkins after nearly 10 years of planning and unexpected setbacks. Background Sometime after 2010, Hawkins had previously built a lighthouse nearby in the Lucerne Valley, California, Lucerne Valley area of the Mojave Desert but it was subsequently destroyed and dismantled by vandals and scavengers. In 2014, Hawkins presented an exhibition title "Desert Lighthouse Ultimatum" at the University of California, Riverside, University of California, Riverside's Culver Center for the Arts Museum. The theme of his exhibition was the return of his effort to establish a permanent lighthouse in the Mojave Desert. Hinkley, California
Hinkley is an unincorporated community in the Mojave Desert, in San Bernardino County, California, United States, 14 miles (23 km) northwest of Barstow, 59 miles (95 km) east of Mojave, north of Victorville and about a 120 mile (193 km) drive northeast of Los Angeles. Just north of California State Route 58, the residents have faced concerns over hexavalent chromium in their well water from the world's largest plume of this cancer-causing chemical. History Between the 1960s and 1980s, several miles west of Hinkley along State Route 58, the Hawes Radio Tower at the World War II Hawes Auxiliary Airfield, a guyed mast, was used for military communication in the LF-range. Robert Smithson
Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938 – July 20, 1973) was an American artist known for sculpture and land art who often used drawing and photography in relation to the spatial arts. His work has been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums and is held in public collections. He was one of the founders of the land art movement whose best known work is the ''Spiral Jetty'' (1970). Early life and education Smithson was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and spent his childhood in Rutherford until he was nine. In Rutherford, the poet and physician William Carlos Williams was Smithson's pediatrician. When Smithson was nine, his family moved to the Allwood section of Clifton. Lighthouses In California
There are several lighthouses in the U.S. state of California, including a few listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Lighthouse Friends (California) Notable Faux Lighthouse Notes :A. Ballast Point Light was moved in 1960 to the bell tower which had served as a fog signal building as the 1890 tower had been declared unsafe. The light shone from the top of the bell tower until 1961 when it was replaced by an offshore light. :B. The tower was abandoned in 1971 when the beacon was moved to a nearby modern pole. This light was discontinued in 2013 fifteen years after the old tower was moved to a new spot and restored. :C. Parts of the old structure now have separate owners, today an automated beacon is in active service. :D. Light moved to a pole. :E.
