The Des Moines Open also known as the Des Moines International Indoors is a defunct USLTA Indoor Circuit affiliated men's tennis tournament played from 1971 to 1973. Des Moines () is the capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is also the county seat of Polk County. A small part of the city extends into Warren County. Tom Edlefsen
Thomas B. Edlefsen (born December 12, 1941) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Career Edlefsen was a member of three NCAA Championship winning teams while at the University of Southern California, in 1963, 1964 and 1966. He was a three time All-American. He won the U.S. National Hardcourt doubles titles in 1963 and 1965. At the U.S. National Indoors in 1964, Edlefsen had wins over both Arthur Ashe and Roy Emerson. In 1967, he developed a nerve disease, Guillain–Barré syndrome, after suffering a reaction to a smallpox vaccination he had while with the Air Force Reserves. He was left with total paralysis. Ion Țiriac (; born 9 May 1939), also known as the "Brașov Bulldozer", is a Romanian businessman and former professional tennis and ice hockey player. He has been president of the Romanian Tennis Federation. A former singles top 10 player on the ATP Tour, Tiriac was the winner of one grand slam title, the 1970 French Open in men's doubles. Țiriac was the first man to play against a woman and defeat her, in a sanctioned tennis tournament (against Abigail Maynard, in 1975). The highlight of his ice hockey career was participating as defenseman in the Romanian national team at the 1964 Winter Olympics. After retirement, Tiriac became active as a tennis coach, advisor and player agent in the 1980s, taking under his wing Ilie Năstase, Manuel Orantes, Adriano Panatta, Guillermo Vilas, Henri Leconte and the young Boris Becker. Jan Kukal (born 13 September 1942) is a former professional tennis player who competed for Czechoslovakia. Career Kukal won the Czechoslovakian National Championships in 1968, the same year that he played his first Davis Cup tie for his country. He went on to appear in a total of 16 Davis Cup ties and finished with a 13-11 career record, which included five singles wins. In 1969 he was a member of the Czechoslovak team that won Europe's King's Cup. He reached four Grand Prix/ WCT doubles finals during his career, for one win, at Des Moines in 1973. At Grand Slam level his best performance was a semi-final appearance in the doubles event at the 1972 French Open, with Jan Kodeš. Coaching Kukal began his coaching career while he was still playing. James Henry McManus (September 16, 1940 – January 18, 2011) was an American tennis player who reached the semifinals of the US Open men's doubles in 1968. McManus was a founding member of the Association of Tennis Professionals. McManus was born to Tom and Margaret McManus on September 16, 1940. McManus had two brothers by the names of Tom and Bob.
