Des Britten
Sir Desmond John Britten (27 December 1937 – 13 February 2020) was a New Zealand restaurateur, radio broadcaster, celebrity chef, television chef, cookbook writer and Anglican priest. He served as Wellington City Missioner for 17 years, and was knighted in 2012. Early life and family Britten was born in Ōtāne in Hawke's Bay region, Hawke's Bay on 27 December 1937. The son of a sheep farmer, he was educated at Napier Boys' High School, but left without any qualifications and then worked for a few years on the family farm. Career as broadcaster and restaurateur Briten began his broadcasting career as a disc jockey in Napier, New Zealand, Napier and then Hamilton, New Zealand, Hamilton. After two years in Australia, he joined the NZBC as an announcer on Wellington radio station 2ZB. His dances for children at the Wellington Town Hall, known as the "Coca Cola Hi-Fi Club", proved popular. Knight Companion Of The New Zealand Order Of Merit
The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. In the order of precedence, the New Zealand Order of Merit ranks immediately after the Order of New Zealand.
