Perth is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Tay River, southwest of Ottawa, and is the seat of Lanark County. History The town was established as a military settlement in 1816, shortly after the War of 1812. The settlement of Lanark County began in 1815. In that year "the Settlement forming on the Rideau River" as it was officially referred to (and which soon became known as "Perth Military Settlement") began to function under Military direction. The settlement was named Perth in honour of acting Governor-General Sir Gordon Drummond, whose ancestral home was Perthshire. Marianne Wilkinson
Marianne Margaret Wilkinson () is a Canadian local politician and ex-Councillor for Kanata North (Ward 4) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Career Wilkinson was born in Ottawa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Francis Rowe Berton. The family moved to Calgary when she was nine, but returned 9 years later. She finished high school at Glebe Collegiate Institute. After high school, she graduated in Geography from Trinity College, University of Toronto. After university, she began her career as a high school teacher. The family moved to Kanata in 1968 where she immediately joined the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association. Merle Nicholds
Merle Nicholds (born c. 1950) served as the final mayor of Kanata, Ontario from 1991 to 2000. Her background was in nursing and was employed by the Scarborough Health Department Metropolitan Toronto until 1982. In 1990, after moving from Calgary with her lawyer husband and two children, she became the first president of the Kanata Lakes Community Association. Nicholds defeated Kanata's second mayor, Des Adam, in the 12 November 1991 municipal election and was re-elected for two more terms. Nicholds retired from politics after completing her third term in office and did not campaign in the 2000 municipal elections.
